Online Students: Grady Dickens

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here is a swing that I’m guessing is modeled after Ben Hogan’s, with maybe influence also from Mac O’Grady. My suggestions start with the posture, and when I compare it to Hogan’s it is easy to see that Grady is way more hunched over with his weight more toward his heels than the balls of his feet. This has a deleterious effect on his downswing especially, as his legs stay under him and work even more under and to the right, causing his head to back up a considerable amount. I would like Grady to stand up and point the…

Online Students: Connor Kumpula

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Wayne, “Here are videos of my son Conner Kumpula. He is playing collegiate golf at Oregon State University. We have worked together on his swing. He is historically a player that hit golf shots with lots of shape. He would change swing planes and use his hands to accomplish this. He has won at every level without working that hard at it. Now that he is at college the course set ups do not allow for a shot to be that far off line. He is working harder now to incorporate good fundamentals into his swing to try and get…

Online Students: Allie Economou Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Allie did a nice job getting into a more athletic posture and increasing her tempo after the first lesson, and now needs to concentrate on continuing to try to soften the arms at address, especially the right arm. When the right arm is tight and stiffens as the takeaway starts with the elbow twisting inward, the left arm has nowhere to go except out and around, which is why Allie’s hands still move away from her body immediately after the swing initiates. This sets up a pattern in which the upper left arm disconnects from the chest, and since Allie…

Online Students: Steve Rogers

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

: Wayne, I am having difficulty hitting my irons solid. Mostly fat contact, some thin, always off the heel… Looking forward to hearing from you. Steve Rogers You might find Steve’s report regarding his poor ball striking as almost unbelievable considering the technically sound nature of his swing as far as conventional considerations go, but when we look more closely at Steve’s pivot action we can see the importance of what is the foundation of this website, pivot compression. As you will see, Steve’s swing looks great to the eye because it functions on excellent plane lines. There is nothing…

Online Students: Matthew Latham Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Wayne D, I just uploaded a couple of swings this evening to my YouTube channel and I feel like the downswing transition was finally a little better. I finally got the feeling of really trying to throw out my hands towards the ball to flatten the plane, which as you said is such a counter-intuitive move and still feels alien, but the ball is starting to behave better. It’s great fun watching the improvement….and everyone else on the website. Will be watching with intent the progress of Lenny Mattiace and Kevin Streelman!   In this video we see that Matthew…

Online Students: Scott Knoblach

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is an email Scott sent along with his swings: Hi Wayne- “I wrote you an e-mail a few weeks ago to get your thoughts on in-person lessons vs. on-line. You suggested we start on-line, so here goes! My primary goal in golf to develop the best golf swing I’m capable of producing. I’ve come to a point where I can only get so far competitively with my current technique, and frankly, I know I’m capable of much more. With your help I believe I can produce a golf swing that is much more efficient and fundamentally sound. So, I’m…

Online Students: Michael Thackray

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Mike has an excellent swing that can be helped by improving his rhythm and tempo. As we know, rhythm refers to the ratio of backswing time to forward swing time (3:1 being optimum based on studies of a large amount of great players) while tempo refers to the overall amount of time it takes to make a swing from the moment the clubhead moves away from the ball to the moment it hits the ball. Mike’s major issue in his swing is the slow unwinding of the lower body in the downswing. His left knee does not disappear behind the…

Online Students: Jonathan Barwick

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Let’s start Jonathan’s lesson with the email he sent with his swing. I always like to get background info before I do an analysis, just like I would do in a face to face lesson by asking a few questions while the student warms up.   “I’ve been playing golf for around 10 years, roughly since my early 20’s. Got down to a high single digit on a very wide open course a few years ago when I was playing 3 times a week, but now am up to a 13.5 HCP and just get trampled by a course that’s…

Online Students: Tim Maclaughlan

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is a powerful individual with a nice flowing swing and plenty of trunk mobility who could greatly benefit from better use of the pivot and better right arm technique. Tim doesn’t gain much depth in the backswing, preferring to maintain his height and keep his right leg pretty much in the same place at the top as it was at address, and the lack of the use of the ground shows up in the transition and forward swing as he separates his knees in the start down and narrows his arms with the shaft moving steeper in the initial…

Online Students: Jason Margetts

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Jason is working hard on his technique, and states in his email that the faster he swings the worse he hits it, which is a problem when you take note of how slow his swing is in general when he hits the ball. It is important for Jason to overcome this and thus he needs to get out the metronome and work on putting whatever ideas he has for the swing into a 3:1 rhythm. Many times this helps sort out which thoughts are useful on the course and what combinations will work. Along with the tempo work Jason can…
