Lesson of the Week: Gene Slavens- Poor Posture Leading to Early Extension

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

If you’ve been watching my lesson posts you must have noticed by now a common pattern whereby an address position pressured more toward the heels inevitably leads to the entire pelvis moving forward toward the ball during the swing, leaving the left leg in the way of the swing’s rotation and causing the right upper trunk to hang back in the forward swing. There is no way to achieve much of a forward leaning impact when the body is facing the ball at contact, so the first priority in a swing like Gene’s is to get him some depth in the right side of his pelvis in the backswing, then keep that depth in transition and into the downswing so that he has a chance to drive the right shoulder and arm down the plane and to get the hands more forward at impact.

Lesson of the Week: Seth Fuller-Working on Posture and Downswing Plane

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Seth has been a website fan for some time and traveled all the way from Texas to pay me a visit here in Boca Raton. After watching his first few swings produce less than stellar shots I could see right away that we needed to focus our attention on the takeaway (which whipped way behind him) and his alignment and weight distribution at address, as he was aiming to the right (even with an alignment stick between his feet and the ball) and had his weight back into his heels. As usual with this type of setup for non-tour players, the general pivot movement during the swing works toward the ball, which, along with having the lower body closed, does not allow for timely rotation of the pelvis and encourages right leg thrusting and early extension.

Lesson of the Week: Chuck Winograd Making Progress

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

In this video I do a side by side of Chuck to show his progress from out first lesson a month ago to now. Chuck lives and works in Canada and has been in and out of town but when he is in Florida he has taken the time to see me about a dozen times. In talking to Chuck, it is apparent that he has never been given an objective assessment of his swing issues, and he gets frustrated at the lack of obvious improvement from day to day. This is usually the case with highly successful people who are used to being able to incorporate change almost immediately after learning new information, but, as we all know, this does not usually hold true with golf, especially if the swing flaws have developed over a long period of time and are deeply ingrained. As you will see here Chuck has improved just about every part of his swing, and if we can get his pelvis moving in the right direction I think we will take another substantial leap forward.

Lesson of the Week: Lon Tabatchnik- Posture Causing All Sorts of Problems

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Lon is a very strong, athletic guy who has managed to maintain a high single digit handicap despite some serious swing issues. Recently he has fallen on hard times, and one of his friends, a regular student of mine, gifted him with a series of lessons. What you see here is a result of only two hours’ worth of work, and I think you’ll agree that his rapid improvement proves that a good athlete with strength and coordination can accomplish quite a bit technique – wise in a short period of time.

Lesson of the Week: Chuck Winograd- Posture, Takeaway and Right Arm Pullback

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Chuck is a member of my new club, and he came to me as a frustrated golfer who felt he had ability but no concept of what is was with his swing that wouldn’t allow him to improve. Analyzing his first batch of swings I knew that to help Chuck I was going to have to give him a better understanding of what his swing was doing and why, and then work on changing the pattern he had created over time.

Lesson of the Week: Dean Davison – Working on Early Extension and Forward Shaft Lean

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Dean is 65 and just now trying to become a PGA member, which means he must pass the Player Ability Test (PAT) in order to continue to earn credits toward his Class A status. The score required is usually around 155 to 158 for 36 holes, which may not seem very low, but for someone who has never really played competitively it can be quite stressful to have to shoot a number. Dean is in great shape for his age and has no real physical limitations, so we should be able to address what he described as his number one concern, solid contact and control with his irons.

Lesson of the Week: Dan Small – Setup and Takeaway

By J | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Dan was visiting Florida from New York and being a website fanatic (his very nice girlfriend said that) he braved a very rainy and windy day (although warm) to try to figure out why he was “a 6 -handicap short game and a 24 – handicap long game”. It was evident after the first batch of swings that the priorities would be setup and takeaway oriented. Dan was somewhat slumped with his hands low and the ball back in his stance.

Lesson of the Week: Nicole Gargarella Swing Trigger and Right Arm Action

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Nicole plays for Victoria College up in British Columbia, Canada, and since her coach is a website member and uses some of the Wayne D. methods in his own coaching he encouraged Nicole to come and see me while she was down in Florida visiting her parents. David mentioned that he thought Nicole could be more consistent with her irons (who wouldn’t want that) but that the main deficiency in Nicole’s game was distance. I saw right away with the combination of her swing trigger and right arm movement that she was not efficiently utilizing her pivot to produce the loading and stretching in the backswing that could potentially lead to greater clubhead speed.

Lesson of the Week: Andy Heiberger, PGA Still Early Extending

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Andy and I have been working together since we both worked at Woodmont CC some 5 or 6 years ago. I helped him pass his PAT (Player Ability Test), but I didn’t see him for a few years after changing positions. Last July Andy came over to Lakewood for a lesson, and we have seen each other every 3 or 4 months since. He has made significant progress, and now that he is seeing a trainer regularly who understands the golf swing I feel he will now improve much faster. In this lesson I analyze Andy’s first swings and suggest that we try some stop and goes from left arm parallel so that he can concentrate on adding anterior tilt to his pelvis in transition while rotating and driving down into his left foot.

Lesson of the Week: Blake Greenberg- Learning to Load Right, Stay Behind the Ball, and Get the Hands Forward at Impact with the Hips Clearing

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As the title suggests, we had a lot to work on when Blake first showed up in May. He couldn’t make decent contact with the driver and was hitting it all over the place as well, and his iron contact was not good at all. We started with the driver, and by staying behind the ball better with the hips deeper he was able to start hitting the ball in the face and having it go where he could find it. We then got into the irons, and have worked hard on having the hands more forward at impact to compress the ball better.
