Lesson of the Week: Steve McMullen- Closed Alignment Causing an Inside Out Path

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve has a very nice swing, but he was complaining of unsolid contact, blocks and hooks. When you hear “blocks and hooks” you can pretty much figure that the path is from the inside, because you can’t start the ball left with an in to out path unless the face is dead shut, which usually produces a pull hook, and would never produce a block that wasn’t a huge slice.

Lesson of the Week: Drew Wine

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Drew is a perfect example of a very good player who has never been happy with his swing mechanics and the way he strikes the ball. Drew is what you might call a “hands” player, who due to excellent rhythm and tempo and a repeatable action can keep around a 3 handicap, although he always feels that under pressure or on a particularly difficult course he is at a disadvantage because of his inability to control his ball flight.

Lesson of the Week: Justin Hand

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Justin’s swing is a good example of fluidity and athleticism, and his physical abilities partially save him from the mechanical problems he has with his backswing, although not enough to keep him from flip releasing at impact. His issues start immediately in the takeaway as the hands lift the grip up and away from his body and his left wrist begins to bow.

Lesson of the Week: Dmitri Devieux

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As you will see in the first few full speed swings in this lesson Dmitri can really hit the ball. He plays to a scratch and competes in amateur events in New Jersey (he’s the club champ at his club) but would like to achieve a higher quality strike with his irons. He feels as though he could compress the ball better and control his ball flight to a greater degree, and when we slow down his swing it is apparent how that can be accomplished.

Lesson of the Week: Frank Flynn

By J | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Frank came all the way from Ireland (not specifically for this lesson but that sounds good) and has adapted a swing for his usual windy links course. Frank is an excellent player (a 1 handicap) and as you will see has an excellent swing with wonderful impact alignments. The first thing I noticed about his swing (other than how good it was) was how much he closed his entire setup, aiming his feet, hips and shoulders well to the right.

Lesson of the Week: Jack Ledonne

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I’ve been encouraged by some members to do more lesson videos with middle to higher handicap players. Jack is 65 years old and over the last few years his game has deteriorated to the point where his swing feels short and stiff with no power and the ball going all over the place. Jack is particularly inflexible, so I know that if I can get his swing some freedom he can lengthen it a bit and get it coming down less steep.

Lesson of the Week: Andy Heiberger, PGA

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I met Andy about 6 years ago, when he was an intern at Woodmont CC where I worked at the time, and he was struggling to pass his Player Ability Test (PAT). We managed to get through that and have continued to work on his swing periodically since then. Andy’s chronic issue has always been the fact that his lower body pushed out from under him and by the time he gets to impact he is standing almost straight up.
