Here it is, the first of the year, and I’m taking the opportunity to hit a few balls and work on my swing. It’s cold out, and the heated bay at Woodmont where I teach, with its V-1 computer system, is the perfect place to really grind away on the swing glitches that have plagued me over the many years I have played competitive golf. My guess was that anything that I attempted to teach Stan was lost in a matter of moments, since his retention rate was around 10 seconds, or the time it took him to rake another ball over to machine gun out onto the range.

Some year’s back I wrote an article titled “Interview with the Devil’s Advocate, in which I assumed the guise of a somewhat belligerent interviewer and asked myself questions on a number of topics concerning my experiences with the game of golf. I found it to be a nice vehicle to express thoughts and opinions in a fashion that differed from the usual lecture mode most pieces drift into.
