Basement Tapes: More from the Basement

You all may be wondering why I seem to be coming up with a lot of new stuff these days but you have to remember that I haven’t been able to use my pivot correctly in a long time and now that the surgery and my rehab has allowed me to feel the things I’ve been talking about I feel that my learning curve is going way up. I’ve said before that since about 2008 my lower back and hips have felt stiff and painful, and every time I attempted to load into my right side they let me know that wasn’t a good idea if I wanted to be able to play or practice the next day. The more I tried to do things correctly (as I envisioned it) the more my body felt beat up. Now, however, while it’s not perfect (I still have to watch that I don’t overdo it) at least I can feel the specific muscles that I need to use all through the swing. Here I focus a bit more on the backswing and transition and the feeling of using the inside muscles of both legs to help brace the backswing and to keep the left leg from getting out from under me in the forward swing. My main goals are to load into a deeper right hip while maintaining my knee flex and to initiate the downswing without my weight heading toward the front of my left foot. The muscles I am now trying to use are weak from lack of use, so I believe that in order to get back to being competitive I have to keep up with my daily workouts and slowly add exercises to strengthen my entire midsection front and back. It is way more fun to work on the swing when I can see that I am physically able to make some necessary improvements.
