Tiger Woods Driver: in the Wayne D. Lines

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s not often that we get a TV view of any shot with a stable camera and a perfect camera angle, but here on the second hole at Augusta we get just that, and I take advantage of the opportunity to put Tiger inside the Wayne D. lines to see what his pivot is up to. Television does not utilize shutter speed in their cameras (other than the special slow-motion ones) so we can’t provide much detail about the shaft and clubface, although the blur of the club gives us some idea of where the shaft is pointing during the…

Brooks Koepka Demonstrating Deep Hips While Staying Out Over the Ball

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I should put a warning label on this video that says “Caution: Quite Physically Difficult to Accomplish”, although if you can get a bit closer to what Koepka does your swing will definitely improve. Staying bent over during the golf swing (not to mention getting even more bent over like Brooks does here) is possibly the most physically demanding movement in the golf swing. Koepka is loading pressure into his right leg while adding right hip flexion and maintaining his right knee flex, all the while keeping his head perfectly up against the forehead line. This is pivot movement at…

Keith Mitchell Demonstrating a Controlled Knock-Down Wedge

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video I look at Honda winner Keith Mitchell hitting a 91- yard wedge shot with a technique designed to control trajectory and spin. The shot can be interchangeably called a “knock-down”, a “3/4”, or a “cut off”, and the idea is by reducing the length of both the backswing and the follow through and perhaps also by gripping down on the club the player can produce say a 9-iron shot with a 7 iron and achieve a flatter, more penetrating flight that will not spin up into the wind. My guess here is that Mitchell is not hitting…

Lesson of the Week: Andrew Teo Having a Breakthrough

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

If you have watched any of Andrew’s lesson videos (you should) you will see just how stubborn his backswing hitch has been to get rid of. Andrew is a good player and an athlete, and you might think that once he is made aware of such an obvious and exaggerated flaw that he could fix it fairly quickly. Of course, in golf this is rarely the case, as there are so many elements to putting the clubface to the ball that players often lack awareness of what they are doing and even when they see it in action on a…

Online Lesson: Phil Pfeiffer- Still Trying to Create More Posture

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

If you go back and look at some of Phil’s previous lessons, you will see that he has improved his swing quite a bit. There a couple things I focus on here, including bracing in the right foot better and adding a bit of wrist cock to the backswing, but the main idea is to create more bend in the waist and upper body in both the backswing and the forward swing. If you start with a fairly erect posture as Phil does you are going to need to add bend in the backswing and in the forward swing. This…

Playing for Money: Brett Walker-Utilizing Punch Shots for Better Sequence and Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Brett is a young professional trying to play for a living who has been working with me for a few months. He is a good player but understands he needs to improve his ball striking to have a chance when the tour qualifiers come up. Brett would like to improve his sequencing as he dislikes the forward lean of his upper body in transition. In this video I note that Brett’s set up is off center to the right, which may have a lot to do with his eventual forward head movement. I suggest that he continue to quiet his…

Swing Analysis: Adam Scott Looking like Old Tiger

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Adam Scott has had one of the best swings in golf for a long time. I played with him the first two rounds of the 2001 PGA at Atlanta Athletic Club and it was fun to watch to say the least even though he didn’t play particularly well and missed the cut. It is not surprising that his swing still has the Butch Harmon signature moves in it, and that the video shows it is quite similar to Tiger’s swing from the early 2000’s. The technique is one everyone could model, if only everyone had the physical build and ability…

Lesson of the Week: John Krystynak- Backswing and Sequence Work

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

John started with me online back in 2015, sent swings a few times that year and in 2016 and 17, then came down to Florida for a face to face in February of 2018. He returned a couple weeks ago for another look, and as usual we found ourselves working on the same issues. I’d like to see John use his entire upper body to get the swing started instead of just his hands, and when he does, I want him to stretch the backswing out much wider so that the upper right arm and shoulder don’t pull back behind…

Lesson of the Week: Jamie Kilmer, PGA – Part 5

By Wayne | Videos: Pro Tip of the Week

Jamie’s swing has improved since we started working together just over a year ago, and in this our 8th time together over that period we achieve something of a breakthrough when he puts together better posture, backswing width, feels the difference between right shoulder retraction and protraction, and finally sees vastly improved sequence where his upper body doesn’t lean to the left to start the forward swing. Right arm and shoulder pullback is such a huge issue for golfers on all levels that it is no wonder Butch Harmon has gotten such good results by concentrating so much on backswing…

Rickie Fowler Demonstrating Leading Edge Pitch

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is a nice shot of Rickie Fowler pulling off a difficult pitch from a tight lie to a tucked pin. He needs to land the ball just over a bunker well left of the pin with medium-high trajectory as it will hit firmly and kick hard right. He chooses a leading- edge pitch where he contacts the ball before the ground with a descending blow, which is obvious from the way the wedge hits the ground and the divot that results. We can guess that he felt like he was dealing with very firm ground and grain running against…
