Pat Perez Swing Analysis

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s always educational to look at the technique of successful PGA Tour players, especially one as consistent over the past 18 years as Pat Perez, who has won at least $900,000 in 14 of the 18 years since gaining his card in 2002. Perez turned pro in 1997 after playing for a national championship team at Arizona State, and it took him 5 years to attain his PGA Tour card. I happened to have filmed him in the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine on a Saturday morning after finishing my 2nd round and missing the cut ( Friday’s round was…

Collin Morikawa Swing Analysis

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I love seeing players of my stature (I’m 5’8, 165 lbs.) like Collin Morikawa (he lists as 5’9”, 160 lbs.) achieve success on the PGA Tour especially when it seems like so many of the best players these days are much bigger, over 6 feet tall and over 200 lbs., not much of it being fat like in the old days. The big guys have a big advantage: technique combined with strength produces distance with less than 100% effort. The physically smaller player must make up the difference by maximizing efficiency and being more accurate with longer clubs. Of course,…

Swing Analysis: Wayne D Looking for Less Stress on the Lower Back

By Wayne | Videos: Wayne D's Swing

I have been encouraged by my ball striking this year but once again working on gaining more speed and distance through backswing stretch and load had negative effects on my lower back, which is fused and has been operated on 4 times. I had already been incorporating a right forearm takeaway procedure and in this video I go for a “Couples” like backswing, standing quite erect at address with my feet extremely open and not attempting to load my right hip and leg with pressure as the club swings back. It feels somewhat “lifted”, although with the upright stance there…

Lesson of the Week: Peter Slaven- Right Forearm Takeaway and Centering Setup

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Peter had a nice summer of competition and in this lesson, we continue to try to improve his ball striking by simplifying some important elements of his swing. Peter’s main issue has been the odd hook that occurs less frequently now but still pops up at inopportune times. I see him getting his right arm too deep at the top of the swing and then moving his head back away from the target (as opposed to the more common issue of backing away from the ball). In our last lesson I encouraged Pete to load more to the right early…

Shaft Position at P5

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video I look at the swings of 4 Tour players from last months tournament at the 2019 Greenbrier Classic. I focus on where their shaft is when the left arm is parallel to the ground in the downswing (P5). The eventual winner Joaquin Niemann is the flattest and has the most shaft shift in transition, while Adam Long and Scottie Scheffler both flatten slightly with a hands out move, and Robbie Shelton is the steepest by far, flattening the shaft much later. All obviously are effective, and I always marvel at the wide variations in technique that produce…

Joaquin Niemann Swing Analysis: Just Call Him Gumby

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I have done Niemann’s swing not that long ago but here he is at 20 years of age winning a Tour event by 6 shots and the swing just blows my mind. I’m all for lowering in the swing (this website is called Pivot Compression after all) but Niemann takes it to another level, and I’m sure you’ll agree when you see his eyes perpendicular to the ground (which means his head is parallel to the ground) at impact. The amount of right-side bend is truly amazing, and it happens after a totally conventional and on the money backswing. The…

Lesson of the Week: Ryan Daly

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Message to Wayne: I’m a father, teacher, and golf coach at a high school in NJ. I have played golf since I was a frosh in HS and got cut from the team the first two years I tried out. I made Varsity my Junior/Senior year. I had a hole-in-one at 16 years old and another at 19 which I was extremely blessed ended up being for a car during a golf outing. I was playing with 3 of my HS teammates and that was a very special day! My biggest playing achievement was qualifying for the NJ State Public…

Basement Tapes: Master These Two Main Pitching Techniques

By Wayne | Videos: Basement Tapes

Some of the best ball-strikers in the world average in the neighborhood of 75% greens in regulation, that means they have to get up-and-down for par every fourth hole. If you’re hitting 2/3rds of your greens in regulation you need to get up-and-down every third hole, 50% and you need to get up-and-down every other hole. In this third Basement Tapes lecture video “Master These Two Main Pitching Techniques” I compare and demonstrate how to perform the two main pitching techniques which are essential to scoring well when you miss the green.

Basement Tapes: Set Up Routine for the Irons and Driver

By Wayne | Videos: Basement Tapes

One of the things I often hear golfers say is “I want to hit the ball more consistently” and sometimes they are already hitting it consistently, consistently bad. If you are serious about hitting the ball consistently well it is essential to start with a consistent set up routine. In this second Basement Tapes lecture video: Set Up Routine for the Irons and Driver, I go into detail on how to achieve a consistent elite level set up. If you’re one of my many high level students who already has a good set up routine it’s always good practice to…

Basement Tapes: How The Lower Body Works in The Golf Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Basement Tapes

In this continuation of the Basement Tapes lecture series I cover three topics: Lecture video one: “How The Lower Body Works in The Golf Swing”, lecture video two: “Set Up Routine for the Irons and Driver”, Lecture video three: “Master These Two Main Pitching Techniques”. In the first lecture I use my own swing as an example to demonstrate how the lower body functions in the golf swing. The techniques I demonstrate apply to all golfers that aspire to an elite level golf swing. I cover, in detail, how to move the lower body through all positions of the swing…
