January Tournament Results for Wayne D Students

By Wayne | blog

Congrats to Darrell Kestner and my former student Dick Mast for their 1-2 finish in the 65-69 year old group at the PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship in Port St. Lucie Jan 12-14. Also a nice return to action to WayneD student and Korn Ferry Tour player Willy Wilcox, who regained fully exempt status for the 2020 season by finishing 16th in his first tournament back (The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay Sunday Jan 12 – Wednesday Jan 15, 2020) after 8 months off with a medical exemption.

Tiger, Woodland and Bradley: Pre-Shot Routine- First Hole of the Last Round

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I was always the most nervous in tournament play on the first tee, especially if I had gotten myself into contention, which of course ratchets up the pressure. Every player wants to get off to a good start, but when your heart rate is up, and your stomach is not exactly settled the pre-shot routine becomes even more paramount. This should be something that is practiced constantly, and the more you do it the same way over and over the less you have to think about it, which is just what you want when you feel hyped up. Here we…

Lesson of the Week: Junior Golfer Conrad Luce- Working on Improving Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Conrad has gotten to a decent level as a competitive junior and is looking to up his game by improving his ball striking. He is accurate but not long, and his iron play can be erratic with mishits and shots that spin up and are affected by the wind. In the video you will see a classic flip release with Conrad keeping the clubface open well into the downswing to the point that he has no choice but to stall his hips, jump up to his toes, and do everything he can to allow the hands to rotate the clubface…

Online Lesson: Justin Baker- Continuing to Work on Extension and Lateral Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

“Swing is looking better but still not hitting it how I would like especially the driver as you will see. I’m thinking a touch more lateral and then clearing harder with the left side/pushing with the glutes. Hope you had a good holiday and thanks for all you do.” If you watch Justin’s last lesson from August you will note that this one is almost the same, which is to be expected as changes for a player as good as Justin are usually incremental and subtle. I would still like to see him more extended in the backswing with a…

Lesson of the Week: Claire Luce- Classic Issues for Junior Golfers

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As we watch Claire, who is 13, swing the club we can see the talent present in the motion. She will be a much more consistent and better ball striker when she improves her impact position, which you will see does not produce enough forward shaft lean to prevent some thin and fat shots from interrupting her rounds. My focus here is on the way she overstretches when completing the backswing, pushing her ribcage to the right, straightening her right knee, and pulling her right upper arm and shoulder well behind her at the top. This over extension, combined with…

Online Lesson: Will Holdridge

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne:  Hey Wayne, I’ve been a big fan of your page since 2010 when I was playing college golf down at New Mexico State. I won some big tournaments as a junior golfer and ended up getting a full scholarship, taking lessons from Jeff Coston up here in the Pacific Northwest.    Jeff was very keen on me drawing the ball, which I took to pretty well. I could come from the inside and hit a push draw consistently. Funny enough my swing looked a lot like Zach Johnson’s. But when I went down to New Mexico I…

Playing for Money: Lesson with Darrell Kestner, PGA: Looking for a Less Steep Approach and Less Flip at Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Darrell Kestner is the long-time head golf professional at the Deepdale Golf Club in Long Island New York, and while you may not have heard of him if you’re not from around there he has compiled perhaps the greatest playing record of any club professional in history (this means not former tour pros or college golf coaches, but guys who do the daily work at green grass golf courses). Darrell has played in 8 U.S. Opens (everyone knows how hard it is to qualify for those), 11 PGA Championships (meaning 11 top 20 or 25 finishes in the National Club…

Brendan Todd Swing Analysis: A Swing Worthy of Copying

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is a great golf swing. It’s hard to believe that after making 1.8 million dollars in 2015 Todd then missed 39 of his next 44 cuts, then after making a few at the end of 2019 when he only made $250,000, he started the wrap around 2020 season with 4 more mc’s before a final round 66 got him a 28th in Houston. Then, suddenly, he reels off 2 straight wins and a 4th to end the year ranked #1 in the Fed Ex Cup standings. Pretty amazing stuff to rebound from such a long decline, but from the…

Lesson of the Week: Sam Bellamy- Trying to Undo Years of Unwanted Swing Patterns

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

You probably read the title to this video and chuckled. “No kidding, years of unwanted swing patterns you say…join the club”. Sam, however, has quite the interesting background when it comes to golf, having played in college and tried the mini tours afterwards, only to find that he could not shoot the kind of scores necessary to making a living as a competitor. He quit for a while, then came back to the game but has seen the quality of his ball striking and overall scoring ability get worse. He has been a member of the website for several years…

THE BEST Senior DRIVER Swing for Elite Level Play and Competition

By Wayne | The Senior Swing , Videos: Swing Analysis , Videos: Wayne D's Swing

I’m 62 years old (2019) and have limited trunk mobility due to multiple back, elbow, foot and other surgeries from injuries during my long teaching and playing career. Most of the online instruction catering to senior golfers focuses on increasing the backswing arc by closing the stance and maximizing the backswing turn, while I go in the totally opposite direction by suggesting that the best swing technique for senior golfers still interested in competing who are coping with limited flexibility and continuing back pain is the open stance.
