Lesson of the Week: Mike Rushin PGA- Working on Hip Depth for Better Driving

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Mike is a perfect example of the new generation of physically large golf professionals who used to play other sports but now regularly carry the driver 320 plus. You still must hit the ball in play, however, and recently Mike has been scattering his drives left and right, feeling “jammed up” in the impact area and unable to control the clubface. His swing demonstrates excellent pivot sequence when viewed from face on, but from down the line the issue was obvious once the Wayne D lines were drawn on the setup. The video shows that while he initiated his downswing…

Lesson of the Week: Austin Lyons- Pivot Compression Helps Everything

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Austin has been coming a couple times a year since 2013 and while, like everyone, he struggles with stubborn swing issues, he has made nice progress and is enjoying the process.  In this video we see the results of adding hip depth and maintaining right knee flex in the backswing.  Austin looks way more athletic as he lowers instead of lifting, adding to the length of his swing as well, even though that was not a specific priority.   Another big benefit is his ability to clear his hips, as we see his left knee disappear much sooner in the forward…

Lesson of the Week: Eric Cogorno PGA-Center Loading Hips Causing Problems at Impact

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

When Eric told me I was influential to his coaching career I thought that was very cool, and when he asked me to look at his swing I said, “let’s do it.”  Eric does an impressive job with his online instruction, but as you all know us teachers are hyper critical of our own swings and chronic issues drive us crazy. In Eric’s case, he has always disliked his release action, which you will see is surprisingly flippy given that he gets his hands nicely up to the ball at P6 from the face on view. He has plenty of…

Lesson of the Week: Eric Willey PGA- Working on Right Arm Issues

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Eric is a former high level baseball player who came to golf later in life and has made great strides since joining the staff at a local country club where he works as an assistant.  His swing looked great to the eye due to his athletic fluidity, but the ball was curving quite a bit right to left, which is always a combination of face and path issues.  With talented players like Eric the hook spin is commonly caused by an overly in-to-out path combined with a closing face to keep the ball from going directly to the right.  The…

Online Lesson: Joe Flood-Working on Swing Dynamics and Approach Plane

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne, After doing well as a junior golfer in San Diego I got a golf scholarship to USC in the 70’s. I played one year in Australia (1980). In 1981 I then went into insurance and my golf dropped into the once a week turmoil 😊. Around 1988 I started to play better and had a good stretch to about I won 2 club championships at Bel-Air averaging around 73 during this 6 years. I’m not ready to accept the fact, maybe dreaming a bit, that I cannot play at that good stretch level again. My short game is good, my…

Sam Burns Swing Analysis: Long off the Tee, Solid Ball Striker, Great Putter

By Wayne D | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Stats don’t lie (usually), and when you average 310 off the tee, are 11th on Tour in Strokes Gained Approaching the Green, and top 10 in Strokes Gained Putting you are going to win a lot of money and put yourself in position to win with some regularity.  Burns shines because unlike other excellent players with great stats he wins more often when he has a chance, three times already this year.  He is a strong looking athlete at 6’1” and 185 lbs., and his swing is good enough to want to copy, utilizing the OTTFTI method of outward hand…

Wayne D Swing Analysis: Working on Getting Rid of my Throw Release

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

It has been a year and a half since I had the two discs above my previous (1986) two level fusion fused (that makes four for the math impaired) and I am getting closer to being able to compete again against senior club professionals. I have come to terms with not being able to wind up in the backswing like I might wish to, but my takeaway is now consistently good, and my hip depth has improved as well. My OTTFTI transition is also doing what I would like it to, and while I still would like to have my…

Online Lesson: Karl Myers- Wondering if He Should Make a Radical Swing Change

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Online Students

I’m 6 ft. 170 lbs. 67 years old. Have a body sway rollover release. Would like advice on whether to go with senior swing or work with what I have and improve from there. Thanks Wayne! For those that don’t know what Karl is referring to when he says, “senior swing” please refer to my YouTube video “Best Senior Swing”, where I advocate a radically open stance and arm oriented backswing for players who have for whatever reason developed limited mobility and need a way to create power without torquing the body in the backswing. My advice to Karl is…

Over the Top from the Inside (OTTFTI): the Modern Players

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Yes, I know this video is too long, so you don’t have to watch it all at once.  But if you like watching great golf swings (these just happen to demonstrate the outward hand path and shallowing shaft) there are a bunch of them here.  This method of transition is a preference of mine, and by no means does every Tour player employ it, but quite a few do and their swings appeal to me more than ones those where the hands either drop straight down or fall backwards.  I use the analogy of sidearm throwing as Hogan did in…

Kevin Na Swing Analysis: Doesn’t Have to be Perfect When You Have the Best Short Game on Tour

By Wayne D | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

I love to watch guys like Na who don’t drive the ball particularly long or straight and aren’t the best ball strikers around but play consistently great golf. After all, the game is about scoring, and Na has been #1 in Strokes Gained Around the Green 3 times in the last 10 years while having solid putting stats. Na is 5’11”, the same as Hideki Matsuyama, but Matsuyama outweighs Na by 30 pounds and is 15 to 20 yards longer off the tee. You might expect Na to be among the most accurate drivers considering his lack of length, but…
