Swing Analysis: Matthias Schwab- European Tour 2nd Year Player Showing Excellent Form

By J | Videos: Swing Analysis

Schwab had a nice rookie season last year on the European Tour and has two top-10’s this year, including finishing 3rd in the BMW International a few weeks ago, which is where this particular swing comes from. Schwab is a direct contrast to Matthew Wolff in that while Wolff plays a reactive game that requires little conscious thought, Schwab is deliberate and disciplined in his rehearsals, set up procedure, and with his simple looking swing that follows conventional plane lines. Schwab had an excellent college career at Vanderbilt U, and was the highest European in the world amateur rankings when…

Lesson of the Week: Arthur Slaven – Changing Stubborn Patterns

By J | Videos: Pro Tip of the Week

Most golfers have no idea how difficult it is to make overall improvements in a swing with multiple flaws, especially if the results that the flawed swing produces are considered good enough not to cause embarrassment. Arthur came to me with a swing that made it difficult for me to figure out what to start working on first. There was a catalog of errors: loose grip, closed upper body set up, shut face in the backswing, pelvis loading left, arms disconnecting, downswing sequence started with the upper body, throw release. Fixing these one at a time was not going to…

Matthew Wolff and Jimmy Bruen: 70 Years Apart but Strikingly Similar Action

By J | Videos: Swing Analysis

I was first introduced to Jimmy Bruen’s swing by a WayneD.com member, and the action was so memorable that when I saw Wolff’s swing last year on the telecast of the NCAA Championship, I immediately harkened back to the footage of the young Irishman who won the British Amateur in 1946. Bruen came to prominence some 10 years earlier, winning the British Boys Championship and then qualifying a playing in the Walker Cup matches at Sunningdale in 1938 at the age of 18. Bruen was known for his prodigious length and his odd swing and would likely have had a…

Lesson of the Week: Dan Small – Setup and Takeaway

By J | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Dan was visiting Florida from New York and being a website fanatic (his very nice girlfriend said that) he braved a very rainy and windy day (although warm) to try to figure out why he was “a 6 -handicap short game and a 24 – handicap long game”. It was evident after the first batch of swings that the priorities would be setup and takeaway oriented. Dan was somewhat slumped with his hands low and the ball back in his stance.

Online Students: John Lamendola 12

By J | Videos: Online Students

John has been a consistent online lesson taker (along with 3 face -to -face lessons) and has shown remarkable improvement in his technique and in the results he has achieved on the golf course. He has the good fortune to have a basement studio with all sorts of useful technology, which makes processing and practicing the suggestions I make over the internet much easier.

Ten Days in August

By J | Articles: Playing Tournament Golf

It was déjà vu all over again. Wednesday afternoon, on the driving range, at the PGA Championship, searching for a swing that would hit the ball within 10 yards of where I was aiming while traveling at least 260 yards in the air. And when hadn’t I been looking for that? No time I could remember: only now it was, once again, paramount that I find it, and quickly.   It is one thing to play a 6900 yard golf course with 35 yard wide fairways flanked by light to moderate rough, fair sized greens that were somewhat receptive to…

Online Students: Doug De Mott

By J | Videos: Online Students

As you can see from Doug’s email he is an avid student of the game, and in this video, I hope to get him on the right track as he tries to improve his ball striking. My main issue with Doug’s swing begins with his arm position at address and how that affects the takeaway. This is another example of a common pattern among players who like to keep their right arm stiff at address and their upper right arm firmly against the body in the backswing.

Lesson of the Week: Frank Flynn

By J | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Frank came all the way from Ireland (not specifically for this lesson but that sounds good) and has adapted a swing for his usual windy links course. Frank is an excellent player (a 1 handicap) and as you will see has an excellent swing with wonderful impact alignments. The first thing I noticed about his swing (other than how good it was) was how much he closed his entire setup, aiming his feet, hips and shoulders well to the right.
