Lesson of the Week: Brendan O’Reilly- Working on Early Ground Force Issues

Brendan played 4 years of D1 golf at the University of Illinois, one of the top ten programs in the country over the last decade. He hovered around 5th or 6th man most of the time, and, according to Brendan, was held back by less than great ball striking. He has watched my swing analysis videos on YouTube and thought that my approach to things could help him, so he flew from Florida to my new job at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, Maryland to spend a few hours with me. I saw Brendan lifting upward and away from the target line in his takeaway, and then backing away to a significant degree in transition, causing his arms to approach from too far away from his body while pushing upward off the ground too soon. I wanted to see him set up in a more athletic posture, adding knee flex and pelvic tilt, and try to quiet down his takeaway, substituting a more subtle trigger. We spent the most time on transition, where I thought he needed to more fully understand what the right arm is supposed to be doing, while trying to keep the left arm more across his chest in the forward swing, eventually getting the left arm more vertical and right arm less bent at P6, which would encourage him not to push up off the ground so early. It is quite difficult to change a pattern like this with full swings, so I had him work on punch shots, which are designed to swing back to no more than P3 and finish with the shaft parallel to the ground.
