Lesson of the Week: Mike Haase PGA- Wanting Answers about Lower Body Movement

By Wayne | PGA Professionals

Mike flew down to Florida from Illinois in the hope that I could answer some long-standing questions he had about the way he used his lower body during his swing.  I could see right away that his concerns were well founded when I watched his right glute lose depth in the backswing and the left side of his pelvis move well forward, almost what could be considered a “death move” that leads to the loss of posture and an inability to rotate effectively through impact.  We discussed at length my thoughts on right loading, hip depth, and how the hips move in transition, and as we hit balls, I could sense that the only way Mike was going to get the idea and feel the difference was by giving him time to think about what was happening in his backswing by using a full stop and go drill.  Going from lifting and having the left side of the pelvis moving forward to loading back into the right hip with pressure moving into the right heel is a huge change, and it requires a stop at the top to feel the exaggeration and then have time switch over to the downswing and try to keep the pelvis deep and drive it around and back toward the left heel.  The video shows a massive difference in the stop and go swings, and Mike left with a feeling that he now had some real answers and things to work on that would eventually improve his swing.
