Bryson DeChambeau vs. Jack Nicklaus – Side by Side Observations

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It seems like an obvious comparison to make between the two power hitters, Bryson the new U.S. Open champ and Nicklaus of course the Greatest of All Time with 18 majors.  Both exhibit the wide arced backswing and tremendous windup you would expect, along with a perfectly sequenced transition and free release through impact.  They differ greatly at address as Nicklaus utilizes relaxed, hanging arms while Bryson has his arms famously extended almost in line with his shaft and elbows locked.  In watching them side by side we see elements of what may be called a more classic swing versus the more modern approach, as Nicklaus turns his hips almost 70-80 degrees with his left heel coming inches off the ground, while DeChambeau’s hips are much more restricted, to about 45 degrees in the backswing, with his heel only coming up slightly, and then only when he puts his bomber swing on it.  Nicklaus appears much smoother and in control, while Byson’s swing is incredibly fast and hard, often finishing off balance when he swings for the fences.
