Online Lesson: Bill Stanford- the Influence of Posture on Everything
Hi Wayne, my continued quest to be better at golf continues. I played off a handicap of 3 always wanted to get down to scratch but could never manage to do it. Lots of issues in my swing but perhaps we can work on getting these corrected. Over the years my best score has been 67. The consistency however has never been there. I would love to be better and will work hard to try and get there. Not young anymore but still feel strong enough. I’m 58 years old.
Bill is one of those good players (3 handicap) with some issues in his swing that are perhaps keeping him from being even a better ball-striker. This is a good lesson for everyone to watch as it shows how posture can affect everything that happens once the movement starts, and it also shows how complex and subtle those movements are. Bill looks to me like he is sitting back in his heels at address with his knees flexed under him, and I feel that the left arm lift in the backswing and then the pull back of the right arm and shoulder at the top while the knees flex more toward the ball are all influenced by his setup position. I’d like Bill to set up more on the balls of his feet out over the ball (I side by side him with Adam Scott), and then try to keep the left shoulder more down with his left arm less rolled up as he goes from P2 to P3. Bill’s motion pattern in transition is to pull the right arm and shoulder back while his knees flex toward the ball, a difficult pattern to change, which is why I suggest a regimen of stop and go swing drills from various positions to give him a chance to think about what he is doing and feeling at different points in the swing. When Bill gets used to the backswing and transition changes, he can then begin to work on his approach to impact and his release.
