Playing for Money: Aaron Wilson- Working on an On-Plane Takeaway and Less Flippy Impact

Aaron is a professional playing the Minor League mini tour here in Florida, and two of my older students took a liking to him and set him up with a couple of lessons with me. He has had some good results in the past, but he reports that he is quite erratic in scoring mostly due to his ball striking, especially with the driver. He is thin but quite strong and has a fast swing, and he wanted an opinion on his general technique to see if he could become a more consistent ball striker with trajectory control of his irons (he hits it very high) and direction control with his driver (big 2-way misses). Right away I spotted 2 things that I wanted him to improve, his takeaway, which gets well behind his hands at P2, and his impact, which utilizes a throw release with little forward shaft lean at impact. For the takeaway I put a shaft in the ground for him to get the clubhead to go over, keeping him more on-plane, and for impact we learned to hit punch shots and knock down (3/4) shots. We spent one hour on each thing and since he is a talented kid, you’ll see that he improved both items by the end of the hour.
