Lesson of the Week: Claire Luce- Classic Issues for Junior Golfers

As we watch Claire, who is 13, swing the club we can see the talent present in the motion. She will be a much more consistent and better ball striker when she improves her impact position, which you will see does not produce enough forward shaft lean to prevent some thin and fat shots from interrupting her rounds. My focus here is on the way she overstretches when completing the backswing, pushing her ribcage to the right, straightening her right knee, and pulling her right upper arm and shoulder well behind her at the top. This over extension, combined with her rapidly rotating hips, brings her toward the ball out of sequence, with the upper body trailing the lower as it tries but cannot keep up. She drives her right elbow in late but with the hips well past where the upper trunk is her right forearm is angled well back and she is left with having to throw the club at the ball to square the face. My thought on this is born out when I have her hit some punch shots, and with the backswing ending at P3, eliminating the overswing, and focusing on hitting low shots with an short finish but with the ball forward in the stance she immediately produces a drastically improved impact. Of course, the main issue going forward will be transferring the feeling into a full swing and working toward strengthening her midsection so that she can control her backswing and transition.
