Matt plays for the golf team at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and came to see me looking to improve his ball striking heading into the 2018 Spring tournament season. He finished T-4 in his first two events, so it appears that what we worked on had a positive effect on his game. We started with some short wedges, and the two things that stood out right away was his odd head movement in the backswing and his lack of any lateral pelvic movement in the forward swing. In 99% of cases where I see the hips stay in the face on “box” in the downswing I find the release action weak and flippy: however, in Matt’s swing you will see that he produces a nice drive/hold release anyway as the shaft lines up with his left arm well past impact. I am a believer in aggressive lateral pelvic movement with the irons especially, as I think it promotes better sequencing in transition and has the left arm more likely to be pulled through impact without separating from the body. I also wanted to deal with Matt’s head movement in order to get him to load more effectively into his right side in the backswing. As you will see, Matt was able to incorporate the changes almost immediately, producing what I felt was an overall better swing that will be more reliable and easier to reproduce under pressure.
