My driver swing has always been my weak link in my competitive play. My misses are too extreme, and when I mishit the ball I lose too much distance. This video highlights the pattern that I believe has plagued me forever, and now, at my age and diminishing physical mobility, simply does not allow me to drive the ball accurately enough to be an effective scorer. You’ll notice that I said “accuracy”, not “distance”. I can fly my driver 250 yards, and I can bump that up when I go full bore for clubhead speed, but it is counterproductive when I miss too many fairways and find myself in trouble. The two swings you will see here are indicative of what happens when I am going for power, and then how I can improve the mechanics of the swing when I concentrate on keeping the club more on plane all during the swing. The second swing, which is visually entirely different, feels more restricted and less powerful. For me to make a decent backswing I must feel like I swing the shaft more away from my body and restrict my hip turn, which of course is going to feel less loaded and thus less powerful. I am heartened by the fact that at least now I know enough about my own swing and tendencies to be able to make such a drastic difference in one swing simply by seeing what I was doing and being able to correct it immediately.
