If you’re wondering why I haven’t been commenting on the U.S. Open this week it’s because I am swamped with lessons, family, and trying to prepare for a big week and a half of golf, with the US Senior Open Monday in New Jersey and the PNC (formerly known as the CPC) to be played out in Seaside, California at the Bayonet and Blackhorse courses. I have always opted, when given a choice, to play and practice my own game instead of sitting inside and watching, even when it’s something as compelling as this week’s US Open. I have just started playing well again after 3 ½ long years of struggle, mostly due to a combination of physical improvement along with a clearer sense of what I want to do with my golf swing.
About 6 weeks ago I embarked on a new diet practiced by my trainer and therapist in which I cut out pretty much all carbs, which means no sugar, bread, pasta, or rice, among other things. I lost 12 pounds in a month and have stayed at that level since, and I feel that losing the pounds and leaning up (two miles on the elliptical each morning along with some crunches and moderate lifting) has helped my back stay stable while increasing my practice time. I am starting to be able to deepen my right hip in the backswing and lower a bit, which keeps my club from lifting and crossing the line at the top and lets me use my sidearm throwing idea more effectively. I have been practicing my short game more as my club opened a spectacular new short game area, and I got a new putter (Rossa Manta) from TaylorMade that has me feeling more confident over putts of all lengths. I am hitting the ball quite solidly with my irons and my driver distance (along with all my longer clubs) has increased, in part due to putting the new Taylor Rocketballz woods and hybrids into play.
I have the Open on DVR, so when I get back from Jersey I will go over it and report in with some new videos on the winner and those who came close, so stay tuned.
