Lesson of the Week: Cody Lee

Cody is a high level amateur player who has taken a good deal of time off from the game and who would like to get back into serious competition. As you will see he has a wonderfully athletic move with great rhythm and sequence, and a sidearm throwing motion that I would love a lot of my better students to emulate. Cody’s main issues here start with his set up, which has way too much knee flex and is balanced too much back in his heels. It looked to me as though if we fixed his posture and balance that it would allow him to create space for his right arm in the forward swing, a change that would be major considering his arms approach impact from way out away from his body. Cody is the opposite of the vertical hand drop pattern that we have seen so often, and he is a good example of just how different players are with their individual styles and issues. Another thing that will be important to fix is Cody’s tendency to stretch too far to the right in the backswing, which bends his spine away from center way too much. By turning back with his upper trunk and staying more centered it will be much easier for him to get a nice balance of lateral and rotational movement in the forward swing, along with the added depth that should come by setting up taller and on the balls of his feet instead of way back into his heels. When he gets the hang of these changes I think Cody could be better than even he thinks he could be.
