Playing for Money: The Legendary Darrell Kestner, PGA

This was a fun two hours for me as I have been playing with and against Darrell in the club professional ranks for over 20 years. He has one of few best records of any club professional in history, having won the National Championship, played in 10 PGAs, 7 Senior PGAs, I think 5 U.S. Opens, and has won numerous titles in the always tough competition of the Met Section in New York. He missed qualifying for the Champions Tour by one or a couple of shots more than a few times, and has always considered his ball striking, while straight and consistent, to not quite have the quality to compete at the highest level and on the most difficult courses. At 62 Darrell is not giving up. He is still in good physical condition and can move his body fast enough to hit the ball stronger. The issue here is technique. We go through his swing in detail and in the end it really boils down to him using his pivot more effectively and more dynamically to produce a stronger approach to impact and a better strike of the ball. He played in an event a few days after the lesson and reported positive things, and said that he felt “much more open” at impact with his entire body, which I was glad to hear, since it meant that he was taking the idea of sidearm throwing and incorporating it more into his motion.
