Playing for Money: Matt Shubley- Trying not to Cross the Line at the Top

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Playing For Money

Matt has been wrestling with this backswing issue from the 1st time I saw him some years ago.  If we didn’t think that it contributed to his inconsistent ball striking, we wouldn’t bother trying to change it.  Matt goes back and forth between getting the club stuck behind his hands at P6 and sometimes approaching from out to in.  In this case he is hitting too many weak cuts and is still concerned about the way the club arrives at the top and changes direction into the downswing.  Many of my students have issues with over-straightening the right leg in…

Brad Faxon In Person Lesson with Wayne D – Simplifying The Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

After the online video I sent Brad regarding a new swing he sent to me, his interest was piqued enough to want to make the drive down to Boca from his home at Old Palm in Jupiter for a face to face.  Brad has always been interested in trying to figure out how to get the club more on plane at the top and has taken lessons (paid lessons) from many instructors, which, as you can see by his first swings, have been unsuccessful in achieving any lasting results.  There is an increasingly popular belief that fixing a backswing is…

Brad Faxon Swing Analysis: Still Thinking about Uncrossing the Club at the Top

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Every couple of years Brad gets the bug to try to improve his swing and see if he can correct a few things he has seen forever that he feels cause his ball striking to not be a match to his superior short game and putting.  I have worked with Brad off and on and every time I get him to plane the club at the top it feels too weird for him to play in competition with it and he goes back to what feels comfortable.  In this video I go over some older swings of Brad’s (from the…

Playing for Money: Derek Gillespie- Working on Old Habits

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Derek is a good example of what professional golfers go through when they try to play for a living: it’s incredibly hard, and when you’re a good player but can’t quite break through Q-School and get status it gets frustrating to the point where you consider not doing it anymore. Derek was just about there when he entered and won a tournament in Puerto Rico that qualified him for the PGA Tour event opposite the WGC. He didn’t strike it well there and missed the cut, and on his way back north decided to stop by for a look. I…

Lesson of the Week: Jeff Anderson

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jeff is from Louisiana but has been living in China for the past 15 years or so, and stopped in for a lesson last week while visiting friends in the area. To the eye Jeff’s fast, aggressive swing has good lines and seems all in order. Jeff knows from experience, however, that his ball striking is not as solid and predictable as it should be, and also knows that he had a long term issue with sequence. Here we see the power of the video camera, because in a 21/8.5 swing (fairly fast backswing but a forward swing that doesn’t…

Lesson of the Week: Jeremy Wells

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jeremy has been a solid player for William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., and has one more semester before graduating and turning professional. He showed some real promise last summer by reaching the semi-finals of the Virginia State Amateur (losing to a 60- foot putt on the 18th hole) and finishing 5th in the Virginia State Open. He showed he could go low by shooting 16 under for 4 days at the Eastern Amateur, and has finished well in a number of college events. Jeremy enjoys working on his golf swing, and since being introduced to the website (and…

Online Students: Derek Cribb Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Derek worked on his first online lesson for about 2 weeks before sending another set of swings, and the change is noticeable. While his arms don’t appear to be a lot softer at address I think his right arm is actually much softer than the first swings he sent, and that has helped him quite a bit in improving his takeaway and thus his entire backswing. His right arm now bends a bit and stays wider in the first part of the backswing, which allows him to achieve a fuller swing overall and opens up the possibility of pointing the…

Student Lesson: Ben Lieberman

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Here is a new young student of mine named Ben Lieberman. Ben is a good size kid and can play well having won his club’s Jr. Championship. His dad was a bit suspect of his technique and thought it could be improved so Ben could become an even better player. In this video we see that Ben has some things I really like to see in a swing; deep hips, compression in the backswing, etc. Ben also came in with a strong grip and tight, locked-up, arms at address and the tight arms would prove to be a bit of…

Online Students: Noah Wempe

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

The word I use a number of times in this lesson is “subtle”. Noah has what would appear to the eye to be a technically sound swing. Without a proper analysis (which means video with a stable camera and shutter speed along with the V1 software technology) it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to pick out the right arm and sequence issues that I talk about here. Of course, these are my ideas and preferences as to what proper right arm movement and pivot sequence are, and as I see it Noah suffers from a combination of the…

Online Students: Ray Davis

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

If you have been watching these lesson videos it should be apparent by now just how important the takeaway is to the overall pattern of a golf swing. The more I see the right arm lock up and stay overly straight in the first few feet of the swing the easier it is to predict the resulting pattern that emerges, ending with an approach to impact that can be both high and in-to-out with the either the driver or the irons. Ray is another classic example of such a pattern.   The good news is that Ray has an excellent…
