Lesson of the Week: Jeremy Wells Part 2

Jeremy has been coming to me for a couple of years and has improved to the point where he is going to turn professional and try to make a living playing the game. He won a college event this year and finished high in a number of others, along with making it to the semi-finals to the Virginia State Amateur and finishing 5th in the Virginia Open. Jeremy has become a student of the golf swing and would like his swing to function like the greatest players, which is why he has always been keenly aware of his flaws in the sequencing of his swing, most apparent from the face on view.

When I try to figure out what is going on in a student’s swing I will often try to imitate what that swing is doing, and that is exactly what I did in this situation. When I lowered my right hip in the takeaway and kept my head absolutely still I found that I did not feel as though I could start my downswing from the ground up. It is so important to feel the ground under the right foot when it comes to starting the forward swing that backswing combinations that take you out of that simply have to be changed. I had Jeremy do a stop and go with a different backswing configuration, i.e. right hip up and back and head loading a bit to the right, and from there he could start his forward swing by pushing off the right instep, which is just what we were looking for. Once he saw the move on the video he was happy, because he knows that once he understands the whys and wherefores and can get it to happen with a drill, he can get it done in a full motion swing when he gets enough practice under his belt.
