Improvement: Peter Procops, PGA Part 2

By Wayne | Improvement

Our next lesson continues on 9/16/2013, 57 days later (about 2 months). If you missed Part 1 click here to watch it first. Peter’s sequencing was looking good after our first lesson. In this video the first thing I see is a tight right arm stuck to the side making for very little width and causing the right arm to look for depth ending up well behind him and across the line at the top of the backswing. I’d also like to see his weight more towards the balls of his feet at address. I use Ben Hogan as an example for the right arm action and Henrik Stenson as an example of the posture I’d like to see.

Peter’s Commentary:

-After my 1st lesson with Wayne, I worked hard on lowering on the backswing before I sent in my 2nd swing.

-This lesson I focused on my takeaway, making sure I took it back one piece with my trunk, creating width with my right arm while keeping my head still.
These were big challenges for me. My head & body felt comfortable moving off the ball (Jimmy Ballard, lol) and I felt I could get the wrists to set better by folding my right arm early. I found out the hard way this was false. It only made my right arm get behind me too early, which made me cross the line at the top, creating issues on the DS. This was my 1st priority.

-I filmed each day for a minimum of an hour focusing on positions not results and went home at night and practiced in front of a mirror.
When I practiced I divided my time between back swing and downswing. But I spent the 1st several days strictly on my BS. Getting my right arm away from my body as I swung one piece was difficult, not to mention trying to keep my head still. It felt like I had no power…………. I had to trust the process.

After I felt I had a better feel for the back swing, I started working on the down swing.
Backing my head up and going into extension was comfortable for me but throwing a ball side arm/underhanded seemed impossible.
I started practicing this move with wedges taking slow downswings feeling my lower body going behind me on the approach as I increased the angle between my stomach and quads. It felt like my butt was going 3′ behind me and my head and chest was moving 3′ towards the ball. In actuality it looked perfect on camera but I had a long way to go to before I could play with it under the gun.
I was still under major construction……..
