Online Lesson: Karl Myers- Wondering if He Should Make a Radical Swing Change

By Wayne D | Videos

I’m 6 ft. 170 lbs. 67 years old. Have a body sway rollover release. Would like advice on whether to go with senior swing or work with what I have and improve from there. Thanks Wayne!

For those that don’t know what Karl is referring to when he says, “senior swing” please refer to my YouTube video “Best Senior Swing”, where I advocate a radically open stance and arm oriented backswing for players who have for whatever reason developed limited mobility and need a way to create power without torquing the body in the backswing. My advice to Karl is that he does not need to abandon his natural move for an entirely different swing technique as his swing as is demonstrates nice mobility and great athletic sequence. Rather, I’d like Karl to work on more conventional things in his swing such as eliminating the lifting in this takeaway by adding hip flexion from P2 to P4 instead of pulling upward and away from the ball. While I don’t think he needs to go to an extremely open stance, I do think he would benefit from one that is slightly open versus the closed stance he is utilizing in these swings. Karl moves his legs out from under him in the forward swing and swings from in to out, so the idea is to stay deep (I suggest the stick between the feet drill) and try to get the downswing more out in front and exiting more around to the left. His clubface is generally open, so I also suggest that he could experiment with a stronger left -hand grip, as long as he bends the wrist over the club instead of rolling it over. Trying to swing more left with an open face can be a challenging task.
