Frank came all the way from Ireland (not specifically for this lesson but that sounds good) and has adapted a swing for his usual windy links course. Frank is an excellent player (a 1 handicap) and as you will see has an excellent swing with wonderful impact alignments. The first thing I noticed about his swing (other than how good it was) was how much he closed his entire setup, aiming his feet, hips and shoulders well to the right. After watching a few shots, I could tell that he was playing a sizable draw, and with his large amount of forward shaft lean he was going to hit fairly low, driving right to left shots. Turns out he feels that his dispersion is better when he only moves the ball one way, but I wondered what would happen if he squared up and made the same swing to produce an almost straight shot. In short order by setting up more parallel to the target his swing was necessarily more on plane to the target line, and thus his shots were not curving nearly as much, and as an added benefit they were launching higher while not over-spinning. Then we tried to adjust the stance line and face angle to fade the ball, and to his surprise the ball did what he wanted it to. Then we went back to the closed stance and he produced his comfortable draw. He left the lesson with better ball flight and many more shots in his bag, which is nice.
