Austin has been coming a couple times a year since 2013 and while, like everyone, he struggles with stubborn swing issues, he has made nice progress and is enjoying the process. In this video we see the results of adding hip depth and maintaining right knee flex in the backswing. Austin looks way more athletic as he lowers instead of lifting, adding to the length of his swing as well, even though that was not a specific priority. Another big benefit is his ability to clear his hips, as we see his left knee disappear much sooner in the forward swing, always an important part of trying to get the hands forward as the shaft reaches parallel to the ground in the forward swing to facilitate a less flippy release, always Austin’s biggest issue. We always work on improving his release, which of course means lots of punch shots and impact drills. Here we work on his punch shot form by putting an obstacle in the way of his follow through, keeping it to the shaft parallel to the ground finish that the punch shot requires, a measure of control that helps keep the clubhead from passing the hands so soon after impact. We also stressed the importance of feeling the weight of the club lean back on the right index finger in transition while the upper right arm drives in front of the right side in a side arm throwing motion.
