Wayne D. Working on Depth and Sequence

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I’ve managed to qualify for the Senior Professional National Championship which starts September 28th (about a week from now) but I still haven’t been striking the ball well enough to feel in any kind of control of my rounds. In this video, I take my two most recently filmed swings, a gap wedge and a driver, and go over (again) the main items I am focusing on. I find the physical task of maintaining my depth in the backswing while keeping the right knee flexed to be the most difficult issue to deal with, and I have been paying extra attention to my foot pressure in an effort to improve my tendency to lift heading into transition and then lean into the front of my left foot as the downswing starts, which delays the opening of my hips and leads to an overly down the line exit.

Basement Tapes: Wayne D. In the Basement: Improved Grip

By Wayne | Videos: Basement Tapes

This is the first significant grip change I’ve made in almost 20 years, and by moving my right hand grip more up into the fingers I am feeling an increased ability to cock my wrists and open the face in the backswing. I’ve also been working consistently on loading back into my right hip while increasing pressure into the ground under the inside of my right foot and I am trying to focus on bending the left wrist down approaching impact (Hogan’s “supination” move) and all the way past the strike, as I have found that while I used to do that without thought I have not been doing that for quite some time.

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. One-Armed

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I haven’t mentioned it but I had right elbow surgery on December 28th and haven’t been able to hit any balls since then. In fact, I really haven’t hit any since the first of December when I got down to Boca as I hurt the arm just before I left. I wasn’t doing anything odd, just hitting off the mat at Lakewood, but it was cold and caught one funny and felt something on the inside of my right elbow. I had an ulnar nerve transposition on me left elbow back in the early 80’s, and that elbow has given me some issues since then (none serious), so when I felt this one I figured it would just go away with some ice and rest.

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. Prepping for the National Senior Club Pro Championship

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

These swings represent another day (or two) in the life of a golfer trying to execute a swing that does what he knows will hit the ball better. What this constant studying shows is that chronic issues are usually mechanical in nature, and that seeing the same mistakes over and over, while hugely annoying, is the only way to decide what exactly to focus on when trying to improve.

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. with the Driver

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is a quick update on my progress utilizing the “drag, flare, and open” takeaway I came up with recently while studying Hogan for the millionth time. It is helping to accomplish a bunch of things I have trying to do with my backswing: get the shaft up on the plane from the beginning of the takeaway (instead of cutting under), keep my upper right arm spaced away from me and higher at left arm parallel, and keep the club on plane and not crossing the line at the top (rotating the wrists and keeping the left wrist cupped externally rotates the right shoulder sooner which in turn stops the lifting of the elbow and lays the shaft off more to the left).

Wayne D’s Swings from the PNC

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

These are a few swings I shot while I was at the PNC. The driver swings are before the tournament started, while the iron swings with the yellow shirt are the morning of the 2nd round. You will see all my old flaws, but I feel like I’m making progress in that my body held up pretty well and I managed to hit 12 fairways and 14 greens in the second round on a 7350-yard golf course. I know what I’m looking for and if I can keep practicing without hurting myself I think I can get back to being competitive, at least in my own section and hopefully on the national stage.

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. Getting Ready for the PNC

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s a Monday morning and before my weekly therapy session that usually leaves me unable to practice full swings I went out to the local public course to hit a few and took my camera with me. I am somewhat pleased with my progress of late as the set up change I made a few weeks ago is starting to pay some dividends. I don’t know if I will get this by the weekend, but I am on the right track and I expect to be playing some respectable golf in the near future.

Wayne D Working on it: April 2016

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is another video showing me working out problems in my swing. My biggest issue over the last few years has been my driver and I firmly believe that a big part of my problem has been my inability to deepen my right hip enough to keep the left side of my pelvis from moving forward as I reach transition, which in turn keeps me too heavy on the front of the left foot and unable to clear the left side of my pelvis enough to be able to “get around” on the ball and have the swing exit on plane.
