Tiger Woods Demonstrating Wonderful Putting Technique

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video we see Tiger hitting a couple of mid length (20-30 feet) putts, and there is a lot for everyone to learn from his set up routine, his stance, and his stroke. One key word is “relaxed”: his lack of stress is evident from the moment he starts walking toward the ball to address it, then in his posture and balance at address, and then especially in the motion of his stroke. He employs a somewhat narrow stance with his eyes over or just inside the ball and appears to be evenly balanced on his feet. He makes…

Rickie Fowler Putting: An Analysis

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

There are as many putting styles as there are players, and you will see just about everything you can imagine when you watch the Tour on television. I have always preferred a narrow stance for whatever reason, and my stroke has trended to faster over the years. Way back when I had a very slow stroke that measured somewhere in the 60’s on the metronome, but I found that I was prone to missing short ones as the stroke felt too long and wobbly.

TP&C: The Putting Stroke of Brad Faxon

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

About 4 years ago I had the pleasure of spending the day working with Brad Faxon on his golf swing at the Old Oaks Golf Club in Long Island, NY. Before we spent time on the range we went out to play the course which was to be the site of Brad’s attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open that year. Armed with my trusty camera and tripod I filmed Brad hitting different shots, and although we were not going to work on his putting (for obvious reasons) I had enough presence of mind to film his putting stroke front…

Jimmy Walker Misreading a Putt but Making it Anyway

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I thought this was a great example of how sometimes a player can do just about everything wrong and still get away with it. Jimmy Walker grossly under-reads this 5 foot, left to right breaking putt, lines the line up on the ball to his read, then proceeds to take his putter outside and loop it out even more so that it pulls the ball at least a cup left of the hole, after which the ball sneaks in the far right side of the cup. My take on this is that Walker instinctively and subconsciously knew that the putt…

Michelle Wie’s New Putting Stance

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is one of the most innovative, or desperate, technique changes you will ever see. Wie is actually bent over as close to 90 degrees as you can get over a putt. It is as bizarre a thing as I’ve come across in my 46 years in golf, but hey, whatever works, I guess. It does not appear that she will be able to practice for any length of time like this, however. It does help if you are over 6 feet tall and your legs are about 70% of that. Anyway, she makes the putt and executes a substantial…

Steve Stricker: Soling the Putter Lightly

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is a short video in which Steve Stricker, one of the best putters of his generation, demonstrates how lightly he soles the putter on the ground before he starts his backstroke. You can easily see Stricker lifting and bouncing the putter as he sets up, trying to get the weight of the putter in his hands and not pressing down into the grass. He still maintains contact with the ground, but only minimally, which allows him to stabilize the putter (hovering the putter off the ground is difficult to do without it wobbling around) and to start his stroke…
