TP&C: Brad Faxon Part 2

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

I’ve known Fax for a long time and have worked with him 3 or 4 times, but only one at a time with lots of time in between. I have always thought that if he could uncross the club at the top and simplify his release action, with his wonderful fluidity, rhythm, and ability to get the ball in the hole that he would be one of the top senior golfers anywhere. Up to now he has chosen to work on different things, or at least different ways to get to a better swing, but this year he reached the…

TP&C: Tom Kite Part 5- Face to Face at Liberty National (with bonus clip)

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

I can’t tell you how cool it was to meet Tom after working with him on line for a few months. I was visiting my good friend Mark Diamond at Liberty National on my way to Ridgewood and the Barclays to work with Streelman when Tom asked if he could meet me there on Monday morning. Tom had been in Endicott for the Champions Tour event and drove down Sunday night. We had a great 4 hours together in which we worked on increasing the “catch” in Tom’s swing and trying to get the feel for that move to help…

TP&C: The Putting Stroke of Brad Faxon

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

About 4 years ago I had the pleasure of spending the day working with Brad Faxon on his golf swing at the Old Oaks Golf Club in Long Island, NY. Before we spent time on the range we went out to play the course which was to be the site of Brad’s attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open that year. Armed with my trusty camera and tripod I filmed Brad hitting different shots, and although we were not going to work on his putting (for obvious reasons) I had enough presence of mind to film his putting stroke front…

Playing for Money: Jason Gandy Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Jason’s second lesson finds him still struggling with the high approach, and Jason reports in that his divots are steep and left and the contact glancing. He describes the hit as a “swipe”, and is frustrated that while improving his hand path he still has not been able to shallow the approach to impact. I think you will find this lesson interesting as I talk about maintaining width in the downswing, and the effect that narrowing too soon in transition has on the eventual routing of the arms and hands into impact. I put Jason side by side with Adam…

TP&C: Tom Kite Part 4

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

In this video we see Tom make the change from steepening his club in transition to shallowing it. If anyone was wondering if changing was only hard for the untalented the fact that this is video number 4 should dissuade you from that opinion. In fact, just after Tom sent in this swing (which is much improved over the first swing in the series) he arranged to meet me for an in person lesson at Liberty National in New York, a course he just happened to co-design. I will be doing a video on our time there in short order,…

Playing for Money: Jason Gandy

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Jason is a young player just out of college who has aspirations to play golf for a living. As you will see here he has a wonderful, fluid, powerful looking action that appears to have all the potential to be successful. Jason, however, has been struggling with his ball striking, or at least the consistency of his ball striking. Many players with nice moves like Jason can hit great shots with all the quality of a Tour player, but not enough times in a round to shoot the kind of numbers necessary to make money. What we see here is…

TP&C: Len Mattiace Part 7

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Len has had an odd year, playing some decent golf but constantly missing cuts by one or two shots. I haven’t watched him play, but he reports that his putting has been off in some of the events and in others his proximity to the hole is not allowing him to shoot low enough scores. Here we keep working on the swing issues that I see in Lenny’s swing, particularly his tendency to drop his hands downward in transition and shoot his right leg out from under him. In our last session we focused on the fact that he jams…

TP&C: Kevin Streelman Part 2

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

After the big win Kevin has not played all that great, missing the cut at the John Deere by 2, making the cut at the British but finishing 5 over his last 7 holes to finish around 50th, finishing almost DFL at Firestone, then getting off to a good start with a 69 at the PGA before dropping to a 76 and missing the cut by 2. The idea of bring the backswing more out in front has proven difficult as Kevin has always pulled his arms inward into a deep position at left arm parallel. Our goal has been…

TP&C: Tom Kite Part 3

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

This is another in the fascinating series of lessons with Hall of Famer Tom Kite. He sent these swings in from the range after the first round of the 3M Championship in Minnesota, along with another fabulous look at his swing from 1992. The two things I picked out this time are the angle of the shaft at left arm parallel in the backswing, and the aggressive thrust and rotation of the hips through impact. Tom’s club is now flatter at left arm parallel than in ’92, and my thought is that the pattern of moving the shaft from flat…

TP&C: Tom Kite Part 2

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

I was extremely happy when I saw the swings that Tom sent of himself back in 1992. As you will see, he was doing almost exactly what I prescribed in his first online session last week, which is great news because it is much easier to get back to something you used to do (although never really easy) than it is to create all new neural pathways and change into something you’ve never done. I told Tom that if I had had these particular swings in my computer I would have shown them as examples of nice pivot movement and…
