Online Students: Derek Cribb Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Derek worked on his first online lesson for about 2 weeks before sending another set of swings, and the change is noticeable. While his arms don’t appear to be a lot softer at address I think his right arm is actually much softer than the first swings he sent, and that has helped him quite a bit in improving his takeaway and thus his entire backswing. His right arm now bends a bit and stays wider in the first part of the backswing, which allows him to achieve a fuller swing overall and opens up the possibility of pointing the…

Online Students: Derek Cribb

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Derek is a 2 handicap who can shoot under par but is susceptible to high scores due to a stubborn hook with the driver and some overall inconsistency with his ball striking. One thing he surely has plenty of is forward shaft lean, and in the video I go over why that is not such a great thing with the driver. A couple of things that stand out to my eye right away are the tight elbows at address, followed by the pinched right arm in the backswing. If you have watched any number of my previous lessons you will…

Online Students: Francisco Gomez Paz

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see a familiar pattern where a lifting pivot in the backswing causes the club to lay off significantly at the top, which in turn causes the shaft to steepen immediately in transition. This flat to steep progression is a good thing if it happens where the flattening is caused by the initiation of the forward swing movement, and as the club leans back on the right index finger and tries to get stuck behind the player the arms and hands move outward in front of the chest and the pivot drives 45 degrees left, creating space for the…

Online Students: Georgia Wempe

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Watching Georgia’s swing at regular speed you can tell from her smooth, aggressive tempo that she is strong and athletic and has worked on her swing mechanics, especially in her backswing. When she hits it fat and thin with such a good looking action it would be no surprise to me to hear the random viewer comment that her poor ball-striking would indicate that she was somehow mentally deficient, more specifically that she was “thinking too much” or that she was trying to be “too mechanical” and wasn’t “keeping it simple”. Such nonsense is par for the course from people…

Online Students: Justin Baker

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Justin has made nice progress since starting with the website, and even made a trip down to see me in July, where we got some nice work in. He is still struggling with the transition move, and I noticed right away that he had left out the line on top of his head, which, in Justin’s case, happens to be one of the most important lines to be aware of. As you can see, Justin lowers nicely in the backswing with the loading action taking his head downward a bit, then, instead of lowering again to get the lower body…

Online Students: Brandon Nagler Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Brandon has made some significant changes in his swing so far, and now is in position to make a major breakthrough in his technique. There wasn’t much he could about getting his right arm to move the right way and his hands more forward at impact until he got rid of some of his movement off the ball into a tilted back position as he approached the top of his swing. Now that he has stayed relatively more centered over the ball he should be able to use the sidearm throwing analogy and begin to lean the shaft more forward…

Online Students: Neil Zhu

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

It’s always an honor to be chosen to view and analyze the swing of a promising young player, and Neil Zhu certainly fits that bill. Neil is (I think) 10 years old in this video and already possessing the attributes of an excellent player. Neil’s father, Jason, was watching some of my swing analysis videos and thought that it would be a nice thing to get my opinion regarding Neil’s swing. My suggestions here would be the same if Neil had been 15 or 25 years old. The way his father implements them is another matter, and I recommend that…

Online Students: Noah Wempe

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

The word I use a number of times in this lesson is “subtle”. Noah has what would appear to the eye to be a technically sound swing. Without a proper analysis (which means video with a stable camera and shutter speed along with the V1 software technology) it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to pick out the right arm and sequence issues that I talk about here. Of course, these are my ideas and preferences as to what proper right arm movement and pivot sequence are, and as I see it Noah suffers from a combination of the…

Online Students: Jeff Plunkett

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

When a student goes to see a teacher they are going to find out what that teacher prefers right away. In Jeff’s case I prefer the right arm to have space, or “carry”, in the first part of the swing, so that when the shaft is parallel to the ground the hands have moved away from the right leg by at least a few inches, if not more. The right arm is not staying tight or straight, however, as this would hyper extend the left arm, but rather is soft and bending a bit until the left arm reaches parallel…

Online Students: Ray Davis

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

If you have been watching these lesson videos it should be apparent by now just how important the takeaway is to the overall pattern of a golf swing. The more I see the right arm lock up and stay overly straight in the first few feet of the swing the easier it is to predict the resulting pattern that emerges, ending with an approach to impact that can be both high and in-to-out with the either the driver or the irons. Ray is another classic example of such a pattern.   The good news is that Ray has an excellent…
