Online Students: Jonathan Airhart Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Jonathan is an Air Force jet pilot who loves golf and is just starting to have some time to devote to getting better. You will see that he is a hard worker as he has made tremendous improvement over the two months since his first online lesson, especially where it is most important, at impact. He has also reduced the excess movement prior to and during the takeaway, but this has come at the expense of an on plane movement of the hands and the club as the swing gets started. This is not a usual occurrence as swing characteristics…

Online Students: Brendan Howell

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see a nice swing to the eye that has some issues that only show up with slow motion analysis. Brendan sets up well to the ball and utilizes a fluid motion that appears to follow the plane lines well and would seem to produce a strong impact position. Closer analysis, however, reveals a weaker than desired impact and upon examining the pattern of the swing once it is initiated, issues with the takeaway and transition that cause the impact alignments to be compromised.   By using the slow motion video analysis with the standard Wayne D. lines we…

Online Students: Adam Auger Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see a very good golf swing that produces a high level impact from the face on view, with a nice amount of forward shaft lean and sustain well into the follow through. However, when going over it with the slow motion camera and lines there are a few things that we can work on to clean it up and make it better. The idea is to make the delivery of the face more consistent, and when we look at the approach angle of the hands they are coming in somewhat high and exiting somewhat lower, thus a down…

Online Student: Jim Miller

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

It took me a while to write the copy for this lesson so I just had to watch it over again to remember what the swing did and what I said. I have to tell you that this is a very cool lesson, because it deals with a swing that looks mint to the eye at regular speed, yet demonstrates some basic flaws that without this type of analysis could easily go undetected. Jim’s motion is fluid and certainly looks powerful, and has the appearance of having excellent sequence and impact. But upon closer inspection we find a transition pretty…

Online Students: Jonathan Airhart

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Jonathan is an Air Force pilot (I think that is correct, as he is a member of the F-22 Squadron) who has been in Russia for 4 years and now is getting back into golf. He used to film his swing quite a bit in high school (using Freddie Couples as a model) and has a pretty good awareness of what his flaws are. I noticed that Jon’s right hand grip was a bit weak (V pointing to the right of the chin) and that it appeared that his right palm separated from the left at the top of the…

Online Students: Tim Mascorella

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tim sent a nice email response to his lesson, so I thought I would share it with you as it does a great job of summarizing what I went over in the lesson. I really enjoyed the last comment about being an engineer and liking the way I use a standard method of analysis that he considered to be clear and detailed. That’s exactly what I am shooting for!   Hi Wayne, Thanks for the lesson. I am a little embarrassed about the ball position part as I should know that. I was impressed with the observation about the back…

Online Students: Kerry Ondrovik Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see a very nice swing with good ground compression, excellent transition movement, and a vastly improved impact area. I see a couple of areas to focus on in order to continue the progress made over the past year, starting with the address position. I like the shaft to point at the belt buckle at address, and in Kerry’s setup we see a lower hand position. His backswing is triggered by a sliding movement to the right which happens before the club moves, and that, combined with the low hands, causes the club to start back under the shaft…

Online Students: Joakim Strom Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Joakim has taken a number of online lessons and his swing has shown great progress. We still need to work on a few things so that his impact with the iron shots can be more forward leaned and sustained past impact. To start with I suggest that he soften his arms at address (let the elbows bend a bit) and then turn his upper trunk earlier in the backswing so that by the time the left arm is parallel to the ground he would look and feel almost fully coiled with his shoulders turned almost 90 degrees. Then, in transition,…

Online Students: Robert Petersen Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Robert took an online lesson about a year ago, so we can see here how he has progressed and which items have been harder to change. The main thrust of our first go round was to try to eliminate lifting in the backswing and to achieve better arm structure at the top of the swing. Robert tended to start with his weight in his heels and raise up going back, and then as he got to the top of his swing his right arm over bent which in turn caused his left arm to buckle considerably. As a result, his…

Online Students: Jon Lindstrom

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is another example of an excellent swing with weakness at impact caused by a variety of factors which have to be traced all the way back to the beginning of the motion. We don’t have to bother with Jon’s set-up or grip, as they look fine here. We can, however, start with the takeaway, as the club comes back a bit closed and under the shaft plane line. It is not mandatory to have a perfect takeaway, but when you look at how the swing progresses you can see that it would be a good idea to change the…
