Pitching Techniques of the Tour Pros

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Over time I have compiled quite a number of pitch shots by various Tour pros so I thought it would be interesting to go over some of these and discuss the different techniques they utilize. The two most common shots are the “leading edge” pitch, and the “using the bounce” pitch. As you will see, the leading edge pitch refers to a shot struck with the hands well ahead of the clubhead and the shaft leaning forward at impact. Most of the time the impact position is previewed at address by leaning the weight forward and the hands forward prior…

Swing Analysis: The “Hands-Out Move” Dominates the Tour

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I like to go through the TV telecasts that I DVR, pick the interesting swings and load them onto my camera, then load them onto my computer and into my V1, then go through and attach names to them, and then (finally) watch all of them to figure out what kind of video I am going to do. Most of the time I will pick out one or two guys who are playing well and are on camera a bunch and do a swing analysis, or other times, like this one, I will find a general theme amongst the swings…

Swing Analysis: Right Arm Action: Drive it in or Leave it back?

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video I take a look at the way the right arm functions in different players, and discuss my reasons for preferring one method over the other. We start with Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson, both of whom have great looking lines in their swings when watching from down the line. There is a major difference, however, in the way they use their right arm in during the swing to produce those lines. Stenson flares his arm in the backswing (as I would prefer and as I teach) but then leaves it back when the body changes direction so…

Swing Analysis: Scott, McIlroy, and Stricker Hit the 100 Yd. Wedge

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I thought this was a fairly rare occurrence, with 3 of the best players in the world playing together and hitting almost the same shot on the same hole, while the cameraman actually does a nice job of positioning himself for a down the line shot of each one. Stricker is a recognized maestro with the wedges, and here we see an example of his relatively wrist-less technique. Scott has beautiful lines and a slightly fuller action, while McIlroy seems to take a bigger cut at it and yet brings the ball in lower than the other two. All 3…

Swing Analysis: D.A. Points and Billy Horschel

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Two excellent swings here side by side as they battled it out in Texas on Sunday. These are both technically sound swings, with no funky moves and a lot of great positions to go with nice, aggressive rhythm. On display are two nicely on plane takeaways, well positioned shafts at the top, great looking “out” moves toward the ball in transition, and left releases with plenty of right side “cover”. Both players use the ground quite well, with Points making a very noticeable “down” move to start his forward swing. It is interesting that the television announcers made no note…
