Lesson of the Week: Marc Shapiro: Fixing Overly Inside Takeaway has Huge Benefits

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Marc has recently seen deteriorating ball striking, which led him to Osprey to have me take a look.  Watching Marc’s swing I saw that he was doing a nice job at some of the most difficult things to teach, sequence and transition.  However, his takeaway was too close to the ground and behind him with the additional problem of standing up, and as a result his entire right side was overturning with too much hip turn and his right arm getting well behind him at the top.  By using a shaft to keep the clubhead outside of his hands in…

Lesson of the Week: John Lamendola- Working on Not Backing Up and Slowing Backswing Tempo

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week , Videos: Online Students , Videos: Swing Analysis

John has made great strides with his swing over the years we have been working together (mostly online) but now that he has acquired a place in Florida, we have had a couple of in person lessons in which I have been able to get John to feel things that not hard to mention and explain online but are not easy to feel without some hands on, face to face work.  Here we find John’s head backing well away from its original position as he arrives at impact, and to get him to feel what it’s like to stay out…

Lesson of the Week: Paul Oglesby PGA- Overcoming 5 Back Surgeries

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Paul may be the first player I’ve taught who has had more back operations than I have, and it shows in the swing he brought with him when he visited me in Boca for an in-person lesson.   Paul has an excellent record as a player having competed in the British Open and two U.S. Opens in the 1980’s as well as winning the Pennsylvania State Open in 1994, but the golf swing is tough enough without dealing with constant pain and stiffness, and the last 20 years have brought diminishing returns as a player although Paul has continued his teaching…

John Lamendola- Working on Right Loading and Width

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

John has been my most prolific online lesson taker for over 5 years, and in this video, we get a rare chance to work face to face.  John has a great setup in his home in New York, with a basement golf room that sports all the bells and whistles, and he almost exclusively films there and sends swings to me for analysis and advice.  We have done some nice work with the online lessons, but I always prefer to work in person as I can get my hands on the student and move them around to get them to…

Lesson of the Week: Dave Rasley- Trying to Get Back to the Old Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Trust me when I tell you that Dave was a really good player.  The year I qualified for the Senior Open I was 51 years old.  I shot 67 and was medalist.  At 69 and in 2nd place was Dave, and he is 10 years older than I am.  That makes him 73 now and having moved to Arizona he still plays lots of golf.  A few years ago, he decided that he would finally fix his short, across the line swing, so he signed up for a series of 10 lessons from a reputable teacher.  He told the guy…

Lesson of the Week: Abe Cohen – Downswing Issues Lead to Fat Shots

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Abe is a new golfer who has succumbed to the allure of the game and wants to hit the ball better.  He is plagued by hitting well behind the ball with his irons, and as anyone who has suffered with a spell of fat shots knows it is a problem that must be fixed for there to be any joy in a round of golf.  Abe’s first batch of swings illustrate a few obvious problems (obvious to me and to veteran swing analyzers but of course not at all to someone just learning the basic concepts of hitting the ball…

Lesson of the Week: Payne McEntee- Many Factors Contribute to Overly Outward Hand Path

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Payne is an accomplished junior who came to me after his former coach changed locations. The first time I saw Payne we worked on only wedges, but even in that shorter swing I took note of the outward loop in his transition. When we looked at it on video it was obvious to him what was going on, and I was hoping that by just pointing it out he could change it. Every now and then a player will do that, change immediately, and usually the player will be young and just hearing the information for the first time. But…

Lesson of the Week: Henry Quartullo-Backswing Path Opens Pathway to More Power

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Henry came to me despondent about his diminished ability to create speed and distance with his swing. I could see right away that the way he was using his right arm in the backswing, bending it and pulling it directly behind him, was restricting his backswing to the point that added in with little hip depth and rotation left him with no potential to hit the ball far enough to make the game fun. I used a simple shaft in the ground to get Henry to extend his backswing more away from him and on plane and encouraged him to…

Lesson of the Week: Jon Krinn- the Helicopter Move

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Jon and I have been working hard on getting him not to steepen the shaft in transition, and although he has vastly improved his pivot movement he still tends to pull down on the grip wherever the shaft is pointing at the top. It occurred to me after watching the swing of Christiaan Bezuidenhout that if Jon could move the clubhead sideways with his hands before pulling down on the grip, as the South African does, it would make a big difference. Jon tried it, and it was one of those “eureka” moments where a simple thought effects a major…

Lesson of the Week: Jon Krinn-Trying to Shallow the Shaft as Opposed to Steepening it

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Executive chef Jon Krinn has been a friend and student for many years. When he opened a high-end restaurant in 2007, he got crushed by the recession and didn’t play golf for more than 10 years as he got his life back in order. We started back up at the end of 2018, and he played in a few events in 2019, qualifying for the Maryland State Open. He has a good mental image of what he wants his swing to do but the pattern of steepening the shaft in transition has been a stubborn thing to change. When you…
