Hideki Matsuyama Swing Analysis: Success Through Ball Striking

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities , Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

Hideki Matsuyama doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being the ball striking machine that he is. He has amassed an amazing record in 8 years on Tour with over 36 million dollars of earnings, 7 PGA Tour victories, and, of course, last year’s Masters, all while never ranking above 78th in strokes gained putting, and indeed ranking worse than 150th in 4 of his 8 years. How is that possible, you might wonder? Just look at his ball striking stats: his rankings in strokes gained tee to green read like this- 2014-4th, 2015-7th, 2016-6th, 2017-3rd, 2018-15th, 2019-3rd, 2020-2nd, 2021-15th. In…

The young Japanese star, winner of the Memorial Tournament, is about as unconventional when it comes to rhythm and tempo as you will ever see. Matsuyama’s rhythm is 5:1, which in a world where the vast majority of players use a 3:1 rhythm is like slow motion in the backswing. Not only that, Matsuyama has no “catch” at the top of his swing, preferring to come to almost a complete stop before driving with the hips. It’s not surprising that he is regarded as having great tempo…

Johnny Miller has Advice for Hideki Matsuyama

By Wayne | Videos: As Seen On TV and Extras

Matsuyama has played some great golf recently and performed well at the President’s Cup. His swing is quite noticeable for its exceedingly slow tempo going back and explosive acceleration coming through. As is usually the case, Johnny Miller waits for a player to hit a bad shot and makes a comment about whatever stands out as idiosyncratic about the player’s swing. No different here, as a shot left out to the right is caused, according to Miller, by Matsuyama’s abrupt transition. “He needs to smooth it out”, says Johnny, not understanding that Matsuyama’s tempo dictates that he utilize a less…
