Online Lesson: Mark Woolway- Getting Rid of Excess Backswing Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne  Hi Wayne, I’m 47 years old, been playing for a few years, based in the SF Bay Area, and want to get a lot better a lot faster. I’m willing to do whatever it takes. I’ve taken lessons from just about every notable instructor in the Western US. I’m a 13 handicap now, down from a 16 a few weeks ago. I’m a big fan of your YouTube videos and looking forward to working with you. Thanks very much. Mark can advance his game in a big way by eliminating excess lifting and twisting in the backswing,…

Lesson of the Week: Henry Quartullo-Backswing Path Opens Pathway to More Power

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Henry came to me despondent about his diminished ability to create speed and distance with his swing. I could see right away that the way he was using his right arm in the backswing, bending it and pulling it directly behind him, was restricting his backswing to the point that added in with little hip depth and rotation left him with no potential to hit the ball far enough to make the game fun. I used a simple shaft in the ground to get Henry to extend his backswing more away from him and on plane and encouraged him to…

Rob Palazuelos Part 2 and Part 2 Follow-Up: Part 2: Improved Backswing, Need More Hip Depth in Downswing & Part 2 Follow-up: Continued Improvement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Both Lesson Number 2 and the follow-up in this post (scroll down to see the follow-up): You can see from the side by side of Rob’s first lesson and this one that he has made drastic improvement in his backswing plane and his right arm movement in the forward swing. By improving the takeaway and adding forearm rotation Rob has gotten the club pointed more left at the top and his right arm in a more “ready” position with his right shoulder less retracted and his upper arm more in front of him. In the forward swing you can see…

Online Lesson: Rob Palazuelos- Working on the Backswing, Hand Path, and Overall Swing Pattern

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

“Hi Wayne. I’m a big fan of your videos, and I’ve been working on my swing by myself for years now. I play semi-pro in Japan, and even joined long-drive competitions last year. I’m looking to check my head lowering, and I’d love to get the hands to start towards the ball a bit better. I think it has to do with more body rotation 45 degrees back.”   It’s probably unfair to put anyone side by side with Tommy Fleetwood but in this case it’s quite educational. Rob triggers his swing by pushing down on the grip and immediately…

Playing for Money: Brett Walker- Working on the Takeaway, Backswing Plane, and Right Arm Control

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Brett had some nice finishes in the PGA Winter Series tournaments last year after seeing me a few times but didn’t play much this summer due to his job, so he wanted to get a look/see as soon as he got back to Florida and entered some events. Brett has the quintessential tour player body (tall, lean and strong) and my goal for him is to simplify his swing by working on 3 things: keeping the club above the plane in the takeaway by using the right forearm takeaway option (he was already mostly there in this regard), keeping the…

Lesson of the Week: Matthew Sawyer- Backswing Work

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Matthew is an 11 handicap who has been a member of WayneD.com for so time, and since he lives not too far from Baltimore decided to come up for a face to face lesson. My first impression was that Matt had better action than his handicap would suggest, but that he could improve his ball striking by focusing on backswing width and structure. You will see a side by side comparison between his first swings with a stop and go drill, and then with me doing some hands on moving, getting him to feel the extension and higher hands at…

Wayne D Working on a Backswing Pattern Change – August 2019

By Wayne | Videos: Wayne D's Swing

As I get healthier and can practice and play more, I have been able to home in on how my physical limitations get in the way of the swing shape I would like to produce. I have a hard time gaining depth late in the backswing and in transition, and when I change direction I constantly drive too much from my right heel to my left toes, leaving my entire left leg in the way of my attempt to rotate and clear my hips. One of the takeaway options I detail in my recent basement video is the “right forearm”…

TP&C: NFL Great Ozzie Newsome- Changing Backswing Patterns and Adding Forward Swing Work

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Having semi-retired as GM of the Baltimore Ravens Ozzie now has a lot more time to devote to his golf, a game at which he struggles, quite frustrating for a world class Hall of Fame athlete. Ozzie has definite physical limitations with his replaced left hip and highly developed upper trunk and shoulder muscles that somewhat restrict his mobility, but his size and strength allow him to make up for lack of swing length with better technique. We have worked extensively on his grip, but he still tends to want to re-grip the club with his right hand in transition…

Lesson of the Week: John Krystynak- Backswing and Sequence Work

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

John started with me online back in 2015, sent swings a few times that year and in 2016 and 17, then came down to Florida for a face to face in February of 2018. He returned a couple weeks ago for another look, and as usual we found ourselves working on the same issues. I’d like to see John use his entire upper body to get the swing started instead of just his hands, and when he does, I want him to stretch the backswing out much wider so that the upper right arm and shoulder don’t pull back behind…

Basement Tapes: Loading in the Backswing (Video 2 of 5)

By Wayne | Videos: Basement Tapes

Today we continue with the second segment of this five-video “Basement Tapes” lecture series: “Loading in the Backswing”. The information in each lecture builds upon what is presented in the previous video so make certain to watch them in order. First, I give a quick description of where your weight should be located for various shots and then I progress into the details of what loading is including how and when to load. !IMPORTANT! One thing I forgot to mention in the loading video was that while I favor right loading and want to see the head move to the right I only want it to move 1-2 inches to the right. Also, it’s important for the hips to stay in the box and not sway to the right from the face on view. Monday’s “Basement Tapes” lecture is: “The Transition”
