Wayne D Swing Analysis: Working on Getting Rid of my Throw Release

By Wayne D | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

It has been a year and a half since I had the two discs above my previous (1986) two level fusion fused (that makes four for the math impaired) and I am getting closer to being able to compete again against senior club professionals. I have come to terms with not being able to wind up in the backswing like I might wish to, but my takeaway is now consistently good, and my hip depth has improved as well. My OTTFTI transition is also doing what I would like it to, and while I still would like to have my…

Wayne D Swing Analysis: Back Swinging 10 Months After Back Surgery- Working on Over the Top from the Inside

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis

The truth is that I didn’t know if this day would ever come, but after what seemed like forever the pain finally subsided to the point where I can make full swings.  There isn’t a lot of speed and there is a lot to work on, but to say I’m happy about just being out hitting balls again is an understatement.  I’ve never wanted to be a teacher who didn’t try to play or at least work on his/her own game, and thankfully that fear has not come to be.  I know to be conscious of when to stop so…

Swing Analysis: Wayne D Checks in on His Own Swing

By Wayne | The Senior Swing

Since I adopted the more radically open stance with the right foot internally rotated (pointed in the same direction as the flared left foot) I haven’t played in a tournament, but I have played a few times with some good results. The good news is that I am still playing, and my swing can still produce some decent speed, although the distances I’ve been counting on for many years are about a club shorter, which given my physical situation is not that bad. Here I show my swing with a hybrid, and the technique I went over in detail with…

THE BEST Senior IRON Swing for Elite Level Play and Competition

By Wayne | The Senior Swing , Videos: Swing Analysis

This video is a continuation of “THE BEST Senior Swing for Elite Level Play and Competition”. In the first video I covered the driver swing: now, in this video, I cover the iron swing. The two swings are similar but there are some key differences when hitting the ball off the ground with an iron, hybrid, or fairway metal instead of off a tee with a driver. While other online golf instructors suggest that seniors prioritize a bigger backswing, my senior swing prioritizes elite-level impact with power coming from proper sequencing made possible and enhanced by the specific stance and…

THE BEST Senior DRIVER Swing for Elite Level Play and Competition

By Wayne | The Senior Swing , Videos: Swing Analysis , Videos: Wayne D's Swing

I’m 62 years old (2019) and have limited trunk mobility due to multiple back, elbow, foot and other surgeries from injuries during my long teaching and playing career. Most of the online instruction catering to senior golfers focuses on increasing the backswing arc by closing the stance and maximizing the backswing turn, while I go in the totally opposite direction by suggesting that the best swing technique for senior golfers still interested in competing who are coping with limited flexibility and continuing back pain is the open stance.

Swing Analysis: Wayne D Looking for Less Stress on the Lower Back

By Wayne | Videos: Wayne D's Swing

I have been encouraged by my ball striking this year but once again working on gaining more speed and distance through backswing stretch and load had negative effects on my lower back, which is fused and has been operated on 4 times. I had already been incorporating a right forearm takeaway procedure and in this video I go for a “Couples” like backswing, standing quite erect at address with my feet extremely open and not attempting to load my right hip and leg with pressure as the club swings back. It feels somewhat “lifted”, although with the upright stance there…

Wayne D Working on a Backswing Pattern Change – August 2019

By Wayne | Videos: Wayne D's Swing

As I get healthier and can practice and play more, I have been able to home in on how my physical limitations get in the way of the swing shape I would like to produce. I have a hard time gaining depth late in the backswing and in transition, and when I change direction I constantly drive too much from my right heel to my left toes, leaving my entire left leg in the way of my attempt to rotate and clear my hips. One of the takeaway options I detail in my recent basement video is the “right forearm”…

Wayne D. Swing Analysis: Identifying Physical Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I’ve been playing better for a number of reasons, none of which are surprising: I’m able to practice without killing myself (I can hit balls for 90 minutes or so), I hit a million pitch shots at Boca Rio this winter which has made helped my up -and -down game, I got a TaylorMade Spider X putter (like DJ and McIlroy are using) that’s money, and I’m figuring out how to fight my lack of trunk mobility in my longer swings. My shorter irons, which don’t put as much stress on my pivot, have become quite accurate, while my misses…

Wayne D. Making Modifications and Playing Better

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I’ve been feeling better and getting stronger and have had time to practice so it was nice to see the work pay off in the Middle Atlantic Section Match Play qualifier on a tough track just outside of Richmond, Va. I shot 2-under 70 to place second in a field of 51, 11 of whom were heading to the National Championship being contested this week in South Carolina. My ball striking was decent, short game and putting outstanding. In this video I show and talk about the changes I have made, which for the most part take me closer to…

Wayne D’s Swing: Wayne D Back at it: January 2019

By Wayne | Videos: Wayne D's Swing

After recovering from another surgery (back surgery in 2014, elbow surgery in 2016, and foot surgery in 2018), I am ready to try once again to get back the semblance of a game. My short game and putting are coming around nicely, and my irons are getting better, as you will see in the swings here. My big problem is still with the driver and the longer swings, which you will also see in the DTL swing. My main goal now is to continue to try to gain depth in my right hip and leg from P2 to P4 and…
