Lesson of the Week: Jody Pelfry-Looking for Better Impact

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jody is a 2 handicap at 49 years old but struggles with ball striking (I’m sure some of you are saying “how bad could it be?”) and would love to be more consistent (who wouldn’t, although I like to tell students that you don’t want to be consistent until you are really good).  As soon as I watched Jody hit a few shots I knew I could help him.  His posture was poor with his weight on his heels, always a recipe for big pivot problems.  Sure enough, Jody’s lower body was square at impact and his hands were flipping…

Online Lesson: David Baker-Working on Steep Approach and Flip Release

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

“I took a lesson from you in 2011. Glad you reached out with the on- line offer. I hit driver and 7 iron. My misses start right and stay right. I like it the feel of hitting a fade but struggle with my release. Lastly, I don’t feel using the ground efficiently. When I try and push off my back leg my upper body jumps ahead of the shot.”   David exhibits nice motion and fluidity and sequences his swing well. He moves the handle toward the ball starting down the way I like to see it, but it happens…

Playing for Money: Aaron Wilson- Working on an On-Plane Takeaway and Less Flippy Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Aaron is a professional playing the Minor League mini tour here in Florida, and two of my older students took a liking to him and set him up with a couple of lessons with me. He has had some good results in the past, but he reports that he is quite erratic in scoring mostly due to his ball striking, especially with the driver. He is thin but quite strong and has a fast swing, and he wanted an opinion on his general technique to see if he could become a more consistent ball striker with trajectory control of his…

Lesson of the Week: Jake Ruben

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jake is a member of my club and has not taken a lesson from me until this past week, although he has been playing there for a number of years. He told me that he hasn’t taken lessons at all for about 5 years, but has still managed to become a scratch golfer. He has become tired of his erratic play in competition, however, and finally bit the bullet and decided to try to fix some of the funkiness that he was aware of but unsure how to go about changing. You will see what I mean when you look…

Lesson of the Week: Steve Bohreer Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve is a website member from Houston, Texas who visits DC every now and then and has stopped in to see me at Woodmont once before. This video looks at a 2 hours session we did this week, and I used the live audio camera to capture us working together on the range after I looked at his initial swings. Everyone seemed to like when I did this before, and although the video is somewhat longer than most of the ones I post I think it will hold your interest.   Steve has nice action, but is plagued by weakness…

Lesson of the Week: Alex Hooper

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Alex has been coming to Woodmont to see me every now and then for a few years now. His swing has improved, but he still suffers from some pivot problems which eventually cause him to approach impact both too steep with the shaft too far out away from him as well as too wide with the hands too far away from the ball when the shaft is parallel to the ground coming down. He has worked hard to gain hip depth in the backswing, and he has definitely done that, but he has also gotten into backing his head up…

Online Students: Tom Richards Part 5

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tom’s continued progress is a testament to the efficacy of online lessons. This is his 5th go round, and the difference between his swing now and a year and a half ago is startling. He has really done a nice job changing the way he controls the shaft and sequences his lower body to produce a more sidearm delivery, but we see here that he has some work to do with his pivot movement, as it tends to drive overly sideways and not quite enough around. My suggestion is to aim the hip drive more sharply to the left, which…

Student Lesson: Kenny Engel

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

This is an interesting view of how I initially look at a swing, decide what items need the most attention, then go through different shots and drills to try to narrow down what the root causes of the problems might be. It is obvious from the first swings I show here that Kenny has issues with his sequencing, his path and his impact alignments, but it appears to me that the impact is much worse than the rest of the swing leading up to that point would suggest. In other words, I see many players who achieve an approach position…

Online Students: Francisco Gomez Paz

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see a familiar pattern where a lifting pivot in the backswing causes the club to lay off significantly at the top, which in turn causes the shaft to steepen immediately in transition. This flat to steep progression is a good thing if it happens where the flattening is caused by the initiation of the forward swing movement, and as the club leans back on the right index finger and tries to get stuck behind the player the arms and hands move outward in front of the chest and the pivot drives 45 degrees left, creating space for the…

Online Students: Georgia Wempe

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Watching Georgia’s swing at regular speed you can tell from her smooth, aggressive tempo that she is strong and athletic and has worked on her swing mechanics, especially in her backswing. When she hits it fat and thin with such a good looking action it would be no surprise to me to hear the random viewer comment that her poor ball-striking would indicate that she was somehow mentally deficient, more specifically that she was “thinking too much” or that she was trying to be “too mechanical” and wasn’t “keeping it simple”. Such nonsense is par for the course from people…
