Hip Depth: Watch Tour Players Deepen in the Backswing and Stay Deep in the Forward Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Anyone who has watched my videos over the years knows that I always comment on the “Hip Box” that I draw from the back of the butt and from the front of the knee line in the down the line view.  Very few amateurs accomplish what the Tour players do regularly: get deeper in the backswing (the right cheek moving back behind the butt line while maintaining knee flex and keeping the head out on the forehead line) and then staying deep in the forward swing, creating room for the right arm to pass through impact unimpeded.  Not every Tour…

Dustin Johnson Swing Analysis: What Makes Him So Good?

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Dustin Johnson is the best player in the world right now without question.  There is no one else with his firepower who is as good from 100 yards and in, and when you average over 315 yards off the tee and hit the ball fairly straight that means a lot of birdies are going to be on the card.  Here we have a nice face on and down the line view courtesy of the boys at TaylorMade where we can see how DJ uses his freakishly athletic body to do things with his golf swing that others just aren’t capable…

Rory and DJ Demonstrate Power off the Tee

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson put on an awesome driving exhibition at the recent WGC tournament in Mexico. Here we see them on the same tee box filmed with the same camera, so we can watch and compare how they manage to hit it out there 370 to over 400 yards (it was at 8000 feet elevation, but Kuchar was in the group regularly 50 yards behind). McIlroy has more early movement into his right side and has a huge stretch of his upper body, while DJ gets the same type of stretch with an earlier set of the wrists.…

Swing Analysis: Dustin Johnson at the 2017 British Open

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

When watching Dustin Johnson’s swing we are usually entranced by the bizarre angle formed by his left wrist at the top of the swing and don’t really focus on the rest of what is going on. Here I look at a couple of swings from the British Open, one of which gives us a great view of his unbelievably good hip and leg action, creating massive depth and adding tilt with the right side of his pelvis while maintaining most of his knee flex (not an easy thing to do). Another swing is a nice example of a knockdown shot into a stiff wind as he flushes a 5 iron from 160 yards, demonstrating his ability to control his power and his ball flight.

Swing Analysis: Great Players, Unconventional Swings Part 1 of 4

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is part 1 of a 4 -part series that takes a quick look at the swings of great players who utilize what I would consider to be unconventional (different, quirky, odd, idiosyncratic, weird, strange, etc.) technique. The unconventionality comes in many forms, as you will see. What is so amazing is that every one of these swings has produced excellent results, and each of them belies any attempt to say that “you have to do this or that” to hit a golf ball well. We start here with Robert Allenby, then move along with Annika Sorenstam, Miller Barber, Jimmy Bruen, Bubba Watson, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Couples, and Dustin Johnson.

Swing Analysis: Dustin Johnson 2016

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

All I can say is “wow”. There is no swing like this on Tour, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it ever. Dustin externally rotates his right arm to the max right from the beginning of the swing and keeps it that way through the backswing, where he takes it past parallel with the driver, all the way past impact, and while he’s at it he forward flexes his left wrist from the get go and also keeps it that way past the ball in the ultimate example of a “drive/hold” release.

Swing Analysis: The “Hands-Out Move” Dominates the Tour

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I like to go through the TV telecasts that I DVR, pick the interesting swings and load them onto my camera, then load them onto my computer and into my V1, then go through and attach names to them, and then (finally) watch all of them to figure out what kind of video I am going to do. Most of the time I will pick out one or two guys who are playing well and are on camera a bunch and do a swing analysis, or other times, like this one, I will find a general theme amongst the swings…

Hand Movement From the Top of the Swing: A Look at the Top 20 Golf Players in the World Rankings

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

The entire purpose of this video is to record observations of a particular part of the swing as practiced by the top 20 players (according to the “World Rankings”). Too many acceptable variations are castigated by TV announcers who have not done their homework when it comes to knowing what the best players do. Video swing analysis is a powerful tool when it comes to teaching a player how to improve his or her swing.
