Lesson of the Week: Jim Farina

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jimmy is an avid golfer and a long- time member of the website who has sent me his swing for analysis a number of times in the past as well as driven down from upstate NY to spend time with me at Woodmont. I recently went to South Florida to spend a couple days with Jimmy at his clubs in Jupiter, Jupiter Hills Golf Club and Tequesta Country Club. We played each day then worked on the range down in Boca, and as you will see Jimmy has worked hard and made some significant progress with his swing.   Jimmy’s…

Online Students: Michael Fredrickson

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Michael was a scratch player up to the age of about 40, when due to family obligations had to stop playing for an extended period, a scenario that I am finding is fairly common: a good player taking time off then struggling upon returning to the game. You can see reasons for both Michael’s good play and recent struggles. He has a nice, fluid motion with good sequence and plenty of clubhead lag, and as a result he leans the club forward on the ball for good contact.   On the negative side we see some things that need work.…

Online Students: Santiago Escobar

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I’m not sure about the level of Santiago’s game, but this swing has the potential to produce some excellent ball striking. It should be obvious to you from the beginning that the question here is what to do with the clubface. It is just about facing the ground at shaft parallel in the takeaway, and it remains quite shut throughout the backswing. The wrist position at the top is not overly bowed, and indeed looks quite neutral, so the actual grip has to be questioned (I can’t tell from a video how the club is placed in the hands) and…

Online Students: Tom Richards Part 5

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tom’s continued progress is a testament to the efficacy of online lessons. This is his 5th go round, and the difference between his swing now and a year and a half ago is startling. He has really done a nice job changing the way he controls the shaft and sequences his lower body to produce a more sidearm delivery, but we see here that he has some work to do with his pivot movement, as it tends to drive overly sideways and not quite enough around. My suggestion is to aim the hip drive more sharply to the left, which…

Online Students: Rob Kane Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I think it is so cool to be able to try to help someone from the other side of the world. Just thinking about the advances in technology over the last decade can make your head spin. Rob is from England, and here we see a classic right arm action issue, one that if you have watched a bunch of these lesson videos you find crops up quite often. Rob has a bunch of good stuff happening in his swing, and does a great job of returning the shaft pretty darn close to the original shaft plane on his approach…

Online Students: Derek Cribb Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Derek worked on his first online lesson for about 2 weeks before sending another set of swings, and the change is noticeable. While his arms don’t appear to be a lot softer at address I think his right arm is actually much softer than the first swings he sent, and that has helped him quite a bit in improving his takeaway and thus his entire backswing. His right arm now bends a bit and stays wider in the first part of the backswing, which allows him to achieve a fuller swing overall and opens up the possibility of pointing the…

Online Students: Derek Cribb

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Derek is a 2 handicap who can shoot under par but is susceptible to high scores due to a stubborn hook with the driver and some overall inconsistency with his ball striking. One thing he surely has plenty of is forward shaft lean, and in the video I go over why that is not such a great thing with the driver. A couple of things that stand out to my eye right away are the tight elbows at address, followed by the pinched right arm in the backswing. If you have watched any number of my previous lessons you will…

Online Students: Justin Baker

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Justin has made nice progress since starting with the website, and even made a trip down to see me in July, where we got some nice work in. He is still struggling with the transition move, and I noticed right away that he had left out the line on top of his head, which, in Justin’s case, happens to be one of the most important lines to be aware of. As you can see, Justin lowers nicely in the backswing with the loading action taking his head downward a bit, then, instead of lowering again to get the lower body…

Online Students: Noah Wempe

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

The word I use a number of times in this lesson is “subtle”. Noah has what would appear to the eye to be a technically sound swing. Without a proper analysis (which means video with a stable camera and shutter speed along with the V1 software technology) it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to pick out the right arm and sequence issues that I talk about here. Of course, these are my ideas and preferences as to what proper right arm movement and pivot sequence are, and as I see it Noah suffers from a combination of the…

Online Students: Jeff Plunkett

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

When a student goes to see a teacher they are going to find out what that teacher prefers right away. In Jeff’s case I prefer the right arm to have space, or “carry”, in the first part of the swing, so that when the shaft is parallel to the ground the hands have moved away from the right leg by at least a few inches, if not more. The right arm is not staying tight or straight, however, as this would hyper extend the left arm, but rather is soft and bending a bit until the left arm reaches parallel…
